Truck narrowly misses house Continued from pg. 1 Before hitting the Beisels' garage the truck crashed through a wooden fence and ran across two residential yards before hitting the detached garage. Ritchie said she didn't hear any brakes screeching or anything unusual until the truck hit the garage. "It came so close to the house. All I could think of was we were so fortunate he didn't hit the house or any big trees," said Ritchie. "It looks like a tornado went through a lumberyard," said Laura Wagner Thursday surveying the mess in her front yard left by the truck. Her lawn and gardens are chewed up with ruts from the truck's tires, her gazebo and wooden lawn furniture are smashed and strewn across the lawn, and one of her trees has been sheared off. Her 2002 SUV sits sideways and damaged in the driveway after the truck hit it, pushing it into their garage. She said the tanker truck just "touched" her house and she has to assess whether there was any structural damage. The Beisels' garage was demolished and many of the items in it, including tools and sports memorabilia, are scattered on their driveway and lawn. Brian Beisel is just grateful no one was hurt. "It could have been worse," he said. Neither the Beisels nor Wagner knew Thursday morning what the damage estimate was to their properties as they were waiting to meet with insurance adjustors, and at press time police did not have any details on the damage to the truck or properties, only saying it was extensive. John Uren, the owner of the property where the truck crashed through the fence, said since 2000 they have seen at least 10 accidents , and this is the second time his fence has been knocked down. Wagner said she wasn't surprised by the crash because of the speed vehicles travel through the corner. Guelph St. was closed for several hours for the police investigation Wednesday and Beisel said it took several hours to tow the truck off the property. The tractor-trailer is owned by a Peterborough trucking company. Police say it was raining and the road was wet when the accident occurred. Police are still investigating the accident. Any witnesses are asked to call Const. Kyle Morris at 905-878-5511 ext. 2105.
