Safety tips for children making the trek to school School's back! This is the time of year where, as a community, we all need to pay extra special attention to our driving routines. There is now a plethora of children out on the streets who are on their way to and from school. We have our school crossing guards posted at busy intersections, promoting the safe travels of our children. We also have some of my colleagues out and about enforcing speeds, stop signs, and compliance with crossing guards in our school zones and community safety zones. Now is the time where I urge you to make a conscious effort to drive at or below the posted speed limit, to come to a complete stop at stop signs, and to look around for your neighbour's pride and joy, for our future doctors, teachers, firefighters, police officers, and so on. Look around for our children. Here are some safety tips for parents to pass onto their children: Const. Chris Borak · Walk your bike in all crosswalks at intersections. · Walk with a friend or in a group. · Walk in public areas, on a route you have discussed with your parent(s). · Walk facing traffic so no suspicious vehicle(s) can approach you without you noticing first. · Wait for the direction of a crossing guard before stepping onto the roadway. · Know your parent(s) full name, your address, and phone number. · Talk to your parent(s) or teachers about any suspicious cars or people you see on your way to and from school. With some extra special attention we can all promote safety for the children of our community. Contact me personally for crime prevention tips at 905-878-5511 extension 2470, or by e-mailing chris.borak@hrps.on.ca. Please reserve the 911 system for emergency calls only. --Const. Chris Borak is the community safety officer for District 1
