GABBY KOSZIWKA and ASHLEY NIXON Local duo place fourth Limehouse residents Ashley Nixon and Gabby Kosziwka were the talk of the Canadian Beach Volleyball Championships at Ashbridge's Bay in Toronto recently, knocking off a number of top seeds before running out of steam against the number one twosome in the semi-finals of the under-16 women's division. Seeded 22nd out of 40 teams at the nationals due to a poorerthan-expected finish at the Ontario championships, Nixon and Kosziwka recorded a 3-1 record in the preliminary round, placing second in their pool. Nixon suffered a shoulder injury in the team's second game that will likely require surgery, but perservered into the elimination stages. On day two, the Grade 11 Acton High School students were matched up with the fifth-seeded duo from B.C. and pulled off the upset, 22-20, 21-19. Facing the fourth-ranked Ontario squad of Facca-Whitaker in the quarter-finals, Nixon and Kosziwka prevailed 20-22, 22-20, 15-9 to move on to the final four against number-one seed Krizmanich-Rosso of Ontario, then were defeated 21-9, 21-6 by the eventual champions. In the bronze medal match, Nixon and Kosziwka lost 21-11, 21-18 to another Ontario team, Goc-Moloney, but were still thrilled to move up to fourth in the rankings as they graduate to the under-18 ranks. Kosziwka was unable to compete at the Ontario Summer Games in Ottawa with Nixon due to hockey commitments, so a replacement, Laura Bye of Burlington, was recruited. Heading into the tourney ranked eighth out of 16 teams, Nixon and Bye ended up placing sixth.
