JV Wildcats coast to spot in football final John Leckie scored three touchdowns to lead the Halton Hills Junior Varsity Wildcats to a berth in the Ontario Minor Football League final. Leckie powered the Wildcats to a 40-14 semifinal win over the TNT Express at the Gellert Centre rugby field Sunday afternoon. Halton Hills will meet the Orangeville Outlaws in the league final next Sunday evening at Eugene Melnyk Field in Toronto. The fourth-place Outlaws upset the first-place Toronto Jr. Argos 25-24 in semifinal action Friday night. The Wildcats and Outlaws met just once this season, with Halton Hills posting a 40-12 win at home June 4. Victor Pek scored two touchdowns for the Wildcats while Rob Cutting had the other and booted four converts. Halton Hills enjoyed a strong start to its semifinal contest, storming out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter. The Wildcats took the opening drive 70 yards for a touchdown, with the big play being Simon Treviranus's 50-yard touchdown pass to Pek that Cutting converted. A Nathan Sheppard interception gave Halton Hills the ball back at its 40-yard line, with Treviranus and Pek hooking up on another touchdown pass, this one covering 35 yards for a 13-0 Wildcats lead. The Wildcats ended TNT's next possession on Simon Akiki's recovered fumble that ultimately led to Leckie's two-yard touchdown run for the 19-0 advantage. Halton Hills' Dave Green also recovered a fumbled punt return later in the quarter but the Wildcats' only turnover of the game (on a failed fourth-down gamble) in the second quarter set up the Express's first touchdown to make it 19-6. TNT continued to rally by scoring on a fourth-down gamble and added the two-point convert on the final play of the first half to cut Halton Hills' advantage to 19-14. Early in the third, play was stopped due to an Express injury that required the arrival of an ambulance. When play resumed roughly 20 minutes later, the Wildcats marched 85 yards for the touchdown, this time on a Leckie run of 30 yards for the 26-14 lead. Leckie added another rushing TD later in the quarter before Cutting rounded out the scoring with a fiveyard run in the fourth. Kaitlyn Andrews, of Georgetown, managed fifth-place finishes in both the shot put and discus at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Ottawa this past weekend. File photo Off to China next Andrews fifth at nationals Falling well short of personal bests in both the discus and shot put, Georgetown's Kaitlyn Andrews still managed fifth-place finishes in both events at this past weekend's Canadian Track & Field Championships in Ottawa. The 18-year-old Andrews easily won the national junior title in shot put a couple of weeks ago and left yesterday (Tuesday) for the world junior meet in Beijing, China. Andrews, an Acton High School grad, recorded a toss of 39.01 metres in the discus and 13.89 metres in the shot put at the nation's capital. Upon returning from China, Andrews will head directly to Texas to begin classes at Stephen F. Austin State University on a scholarship. Jarvis on the run at provincials Thirteen-year-old Alexandra Jarvis won one race and finished third in another at the Ontario Track & Field Association championships recently in Windsor. The Stewarttown Middle School student set a personal best time of four minutes, 53.17 seconds on her way to placing first in the bantam girls' (13 and under) 1,500-metre race. Jarvis also ran in the 3,000m event for the first time in competition and finished third in a time of 10:41.35, another PB clocking.
