WEEKEND OF TRAGEDY Man drowns in Fairy Lake A 32-year-old Etobicoke man is dead after a swimming accident in Acton's Fairy Lake Saturday afternoon. Harvey Sheppard of Dixon Rd. died in hospital early Sunday morning. Halton Police say the man was visiting Prospect Park, Acton with his family and swam across Fairy Lake. Approximately 40 feet from shore he experienced some difficulty while swimming, and disappeared under the water. See story page 3 Grandmother, 97, left in car A 97-year-old Acton woman is recovering in a Burlington hospital after she was left alone in a sweltering vehicle at a Burlington plaza on Dundas St. Saturday afternoon. Witnesses reported to Halton Police that Phyllis Arnott was left in a black SUV with the front windows open about eight cm for almost an hour. The temperature in the vehicle was in excess of 50 C. Charged with failing to provide the necessities of life are Arnott's daughter and granddaughter Bonnie Bouclair, 60, and Kimberly Bouclair, 36. See story page 3 Arrest made in hit and run The father of an 18-year-old Milton teen killed by a hitand-run driver discovered her body in a roadside ditch only metres from her family's driveway. Lauren Cooper was returning from a solo inline skate when she was struck by a vehicle between 8 and 10 p.m. Thursday evening, Halton Police said. Police began a massive hunt for a Chevrolet pickup or SUV Thursday night and located the vehicle at the Halton County Inn motel on Sixth Line in Milton shortly before 7 a.m. Friday. Former Halton Hills resident Stephen Thomas Alchin, 34, was charged with criminal negligence causing death and drug possession.
