A lesson in turning 101 Ah, I love the thought of nicer, warmer, weather brightening my not too distant days. A chance to roll down my windows for a nice country drive. The problem I see is, once the windows are down, many of us toss our common sense and courteous driving skills out the window, right next to the discarded fast food litter that some people expect the garbage fairy to take away. This is part one of a series on driving skills most of us learned at 16. Turning When you make a turn, it is hopefully at some sort of intersection. As you approach this intersection ensure you are in the correct lane. Reach down from the steering wheel with your left hand and activate you indicator to notify pedestrians and other motorists that you are intending to turn. Slow as you approach the intersection. After you comply with whatever controls traffic flow at the intersection, like a stop sign, or traffic light, look to ensure that your fellow motorists and pedestrians are also as compliant as you. If someone illegally enters an intersection and gains the right of way, you are not permitted to drive into them to Const. Chris Borak teach them a lesson because your light was green. Once you can safely make your turn, turn from the left lane of the road you are on to the left lane of the road you want to be on, or from right lane to right lane. If you mix up these lanes, you can be fined $110 and at least two demerit points. I don't want to sound demeaning, but I see this every day. Contact me personally for crime prevention tips, or for police information regarding community concerns through 905-878-5511 extension 2470, or by e-mailing chris.borak@hrps.on.ca.
