(Mike Albano photo) Helen Knowles crushes game-winning grand slam homer BY MIKE BROOKS The red-hot Acton Ladies fastball squad hosted Georgetown last Tuesday (July 28) and clobbered the visitors by a 14-5 margin. Georgetown opened the scoring in their first at-bat, but Acton answered back in the bottom of the inning with Diane Hancock and Helen Knowles cracking back to back singles. Boo Tuf ford came up next and walked to load the bases followed by Suzi Tufford who belted a single to bring in Hancock and Knowles. Acton scored their third run of the inning on an infielder's error allowing Boo Tufford to score. In the bottom half of the second inning, Tracy Hagan led off with a single, Knowles doubled and Boo Tufford walked again to load the bases. Suzi Tufford came through again, hitting a single to score Hagan. Cindy Halonen ripped a single to left which bounced by the fielder allowing Halonen to make it to third while clearing the bases. Tracy Clarke singled to score Halonen and give Acton an 8-1 lead. In the third, Hagan singled and Boo Tufford doubled to move Hagan to third. Suzi Tufford singled to score both runners and up Acton's lead to 10-1. In the fifth frame, Hancock led of f with a walk, Knowles and Boo Tufford singled to score Hancock. Cheryle Greenly then singled to bring in both runners and would then steal and be brought home by a Halonen single and finish the game with a victory. The Ladies played again on Thursday, visiting Caledon East and defeating the home club by a final score of 8-6. Acton got on the scoreboard in the second inning when Suzi Tufford walked, and was followed by a Diane Hancock double which scored Tufford. Hancock scored on an infielder's error to bring Acton to a 2-0 lead. Caledon cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, and tied the score in the fourth. In the fifth inning Tracy Clarke led off with a single and Mel Spear's sacrifice bunt advanced her to second. Stacy Hillier reached on an error followed by an infield single by Tina Duncanson to load the bases. Tracy Hagan singled to score Clarke and Helen Knowles launched a grand slam home run. Boo Tufford then crushed a double over the left fielder's head and moved to third on a wild pitch. She was then brought in by a Suzi Tufford sacrifice fly to centre which gave Acton a commanding 8-2 lead. Caledon East chipped away at the lead with three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh but 8-6 was as close as they would get. This game marked the end of the regular season, which saw Acton compile an 11-9 record. They will now move on to playoff championship play. Frizzell Electric whips Fergus Acton's Frizzell Electric clobbered Fergus Highlander Inn by a score of 9-3 on Thursday in Mosquito minor soccer action. According to the squad's coach, Acton played outstanding with only 10 players dressed for the match. Adam Milligan shone on right wing, sending the ball past the Fergus netminder on a number of occasions, while Jon Goralewski, Ben Muggridge and Devon Fraser each scored as well. Frizzell Electric is the only undefeated team in the Mosquito soccer league this year. Melina Bakery and Town Milk tie 0-0 Melina Bakery and Town Milk battled to a 0-0 tie in Mini-Squirt minor soccer action last Tuesday at the M.Z. Bennett field. Outstanding players for Melina Bakery were Paul Jordan, Clark Sinclair and Julia Sisnett. Rams, Elora deadlocked in playoff series BY DEVON AMBROSE Acton's Galvcast-MacKenzie & Chapman Peewee Rams minor lacrosse squad are deadlocked at a game apiece in see-saw playoff action versus Elora. The series is best-of-five, to determine which lacrosse club will go on in championship play. The first contest of the series saw Acton travelling to Elora and getting thumped by the home side 9-2. Andrew Coe and Shawn Weatherall contributed what they could by putting one each past the Elora netminder, while Sandy Chapman and Jason Christopher helped with assists. In Game two Acton returned the favor, crushing the visiting Elora squad by an 11-3 count. Acton's Richard Raju, Kyle Artem and Shawn Weatherall each pocketed hat-tricks in the big win, and lone goals were contributed by Jason Christopher and Ryan Weatherall. Assists were registered by Raju, Artem, Ryan Weatherall, Christopher, Shawn Weatherall, Sandy Chapman, Scotty Monaghan, Thomas Wolfer and Andrew Coe. Ryan Young, the goaltender for Acton, picked up two helpers. Branch 197 Peewees dump Puslinch, Rockwood Acton's Legion Peewee boys defeated Puslinch by a final score of 9-7 last Monday in minor softball action in Acton. Mike Douglas launched a homer for the local side while Dave Dolliver cranked a triple and a double. Darrin Reid and Brett Petrillo each whacked triples and Robert Turpin contributed to the win with a double. The Peewees played host to Rockwood last Tuesday and fin- ished up the season with a big 10-4 win over the first place team. Dave Dolliver led the team defensively with outstanding pitching and offensively with a round-tripper and a single. Robert Turpin smashed a double and a single while Dave Clark, Darrin Reid, Sterling Luedee, Brett Petrillo and Shawn Lockwood each batted singles in the Acton win. Grand Valley, OPP record wins This week in Squirt minor soccer action Rockwood's Guelph OPP trounced Acton's Home Hardware 7-0. Ben Williams for OPP was in the limelight scoring three with supporting singles from David Preston, Monica Gordon, Janice Tonkin and Ashley Anderson. In other Squirt soccer action Grand Valley's H&R Block shut out Rockwood Campbell's Soup 1-0 in a battle between two hot clubs. Campbell's Soup's Jessie Hepburn, Laura Kennery and Brandon Smith played a superb game but couldn't put the ball behind H&R Block's goalie when the opportunity was there. Acton's Merit Industrial defeated Mr. Mugs by a score of 2-1 in more Squirt soccer action this week. It was a 1-1 draw until the dying seconds of the game when Merit managed to score their second goal to take the win. Cleaners edge Super Sub by 3-2 score Acton Cleaners defeated Acton Super Sub 3-2 in Atom mi nor soccer action last Tuesday (July 28). According to their coach, Super Sub never gave up and all players tried their best to even the score in the final minutes of the game. Scoring the pair for Super Sub was Joel Petkoff, while Lucas Brake and Nathan Williamson were cited for their outstanding effort, as were call-ups Nathan and Josh Bowen.
