Momentum hits Rockwood and Eden Mills community players Momentum, a community play symposium, takes place in Rockwood and Eden Mills from Sept. 11 to 13. "Momentum" is in response to the wave of interest and excitement generated by the Eramosa Community Play Project and the work of England's Colway Theatre Trust, providing a forum in which this community-minded approach to theatre can be described and discussed in order to initiate similar projects. Momentum will lay the groundwork for an Ontario-based theatre company, tentatively named Everybody's Theatre Company. ETC will undertake a series of community play projects in Ontario and beyond. If you'd like to be part of the "talent" pool, or if you're considering a play project for your favourite community, or if you're interested in community building through the arts, plan to attend. Momentum will bring together theatre professionals, arts funding representatives, sociologists, psychologists, rural planners, theatre academics -- together with Eramosa Township residents who have recently experienced a Colway-style play in their community and Blyth residents who are in the beginning stages... all in an informal relaxed atmosphere. There will be sessions specifically aimed at directors, designers, playwrights, arts administrators, sociologists-psychologists, Around Rockwood With Debbie Tilson students and "laypersons" who want to initiate a project in their community. Momentum will offer an opportunity to visit Eramosa Township and enjoy all that it has to offer, including swiipming and canoeing (during breaks), plus entertainment on Saturday night in the ruins of the mill, plus the Eden Mills Writers' Festival, which takes place on Sunday afternoon (after Momentum has drawn to a close). Last year's festival included readings and book launchings by Timothy Findlay, Leon Rooke, Judith Thompson, Linda Spalding and Michael Ondaatje. Billeting for the weekend is highly recommended, as a primary goal of the symposium is communication between -professional and non-professional theatre enthusiasts. Formore information please contact Dale Hamilton at 856-9891. This symposium is funded by the Ontario Arts Council (Special Events and Presentations Program) and through generous in-kind contributions from the Eramosa Community Players. Garden contest winners are announced The Acton Horticultural Society have announced the winners of their third annual Garden Contest. President of the club, Trina Virgin, said that this year's contest had the most participants in the society's three years of running the event. "It's really growing," she said. According to secretary Lucy Pyke, "while touring about, we found it necessary to add two special categories this year, the first being a Child's Flower Garden, in which Allison Crane on Storey Drive takes great care of her flower beds, whichshe shows off proudly. Great start, Allison -- keep it up! "Special recognition also had to be given to the Seniors Residence on Elizabeth Drive, a beautiful group effort. Everyone has a little plot or balcony and the variety and colour made our tour very enjoyable." In the Urban Flower-Lawn category, Ed and Doddie McGilloway of 37 Victoria St. took top honours. Second place was taken by Vic and Joan Morris of 113 Elizabeth Dr., while Fred and Pat Hodkin of 253 Kingham Rd. placed third.
