Mary Bailey is working in the field again BY ESTHER TAPLEY When the weather gets warmer and the days longer, most people slow down their hectic schedules and making room for more leisure time. Many take out their barbecues and sun umbrellas and head for the beach. But for Acton resident Mary Bailey, the work is just beginning. Mary is an active member of the Acton Soccer Club and for the past 11 years she has volunteered her summers coaching and ref-ereeing soccer teams. "All of my free time," she says, "is spent answering phone calls of concerned parents and other referees and coaches." Halton Hills Electric gets clobbered by Glen BY DOUG BOYKO The Glen Williams long ball was too much for the Halton Hills Electric Squirt minor softball team last Tuesday in the Glen, as the local side lost by a margin of 21-0. Mike Fowler and Bryan Coles helped shut down the Glen's third inning attack by working together and pulling off a sparkling double play. Unfortunately, it was not enough as Acton waits for the rematch. When she's not on the phone, Mary is on the field coaching players anywhere from age 6 to 20. Coach Bailey always enjoyed the game as a child but never played organized soccer; coming from a small town of only 200 there were not enough people to get a team together. It wasn't until her eldest daughter Sheila wanted to play that Mary began coaching. Sheila wanted to play on the town team but there was no coach available. So, being a supportive mother with a love for soccer, Mary volunteered herself for the position of coach. She has also done some ref-ereeing for the soccer club in the past but she did not enjoy it as much as coaching. She claims that referees take a lot of abuse from the spectators. "Don't bother the referees," advises Mary. "No one needs to be told how lousy they' re doing." Recently Mary learned that the number of qualified referees this yearis downby half (no doubt due to the abuse to which ttiey are subject). It's not surprising that Mary prefers to coach. This summer, if you visit one of Acton's mi nor soccer pitches, you will likely see Mary Bailey on the field, encouraging some young players -- not because she has to, but because she enjoys it.
