8 stouffvffle suntribune saturday november 4 2006 courtot pledges to be green mayoral candidate pam ela courtot joined candi dates from durham region in taking the green pledge in pickeringthursday sponsored by the sierra club of canada the pledge includes not taking cam paign contributions from developers and voting against the shrinking the greenbelt boundary whitchurchstouffville is similar to our neighbours in pickering and uxbridge our municipality lies far away from the yonge street corridor and is next on the developers list for sprawling development in york regionshe said previous councils have approved the development election 2006 of about 7000 homes effec tively doubling the popula tion of the municipality by 2026 i have yet to meet a resi dent of whitchurchstouf fville who is happy with the development that has been approved she said my goal is to lead this town with a new vision that embraces the concept of environmental sustainabil- ity ms courtot is running against wayne emmerson incumbent sue sherban randy mole and don barker candidate wants waste facility out of gormley by hannelore volpe staff writer sophie angelis is taking a strong stand on a proposed medical waste recycling facility in her bid for the ward 3 council seat in the nov 13 election she ran unsuccessfully six years ago the gormleyarea resident is run ning in wmtchurchstouffvilles largest rural ward extending from hwy 404 to hwy 48 and stretching from just north of the markham border to vandorf road in the southeast part of the ward the boundary jogs in along stouffville road and mccowan road she is competing against incumbent clyde smith hugo kroon and m j perry she is rurining again because she is strongly opposed to the octagon med ical services plant proposed for gorm ley i will make sure that something like this doesnt come into this community and any other community that has con cerns about water she stated politicians shouldnt be acclaimed rather they should earn the privilege and not forget who put them there she said i will give anything i do 100 per cent she said ms angelis will work to make sure the ward which she feels has often been overlooked receives its fair share of towns funding for example a number of roads in the area have to be resurfaced or repaved a small stretch of bethesda road between woodbine avenue and warden avenue has not been paved in the more than 20 years shes been a resi dent in the area people need to feel they are important and feel included in talking to people in the area she found many of them dont know who their councillor is and wants to change that people need to feel they are impor tant and feel included she said that includes restoring pride of own ership so residents particularly in the gormley area dont feel they are becom ing part of a huge industrial development ms angelis believes communication with residents is vital and wants to bring all the issues to the people she believes the town needs to be more accountable when it comes to spending money has to be spent in the right places ms angelis stated when it comes to assessing finances shell draw on the experience she devel oped over 20 years of running her own business currently she is in a manage ment position accountable for spend ing and increasing sales she has been a stayathome mom and was a parent volunteer and school council member at whitchurch high lands public school for 10 years she has been married to john for 32 years and they have two children irene 25 and 20- yearold anthony her proudest accom plishment is her family she says for more on the election go to yorkregoncom and townofwscom
