stouffville suntribune thursday april 20 2006 5 coming to a corner near you maybe what goes around comes around for several years ive seri ously considered becoming a school crossing guard admittedly its not for everyone it breaks up ones day morning noon and afternoon regardless ive long looked on it as an invaluable service performed by adults with a concern for the safety of children ive always looked on it as a responsible service per formed by adults under sometimes difficult weather and traffic conditions ive always looked on it as a timeconsuming ser vice performed by adults who on occasions sacri fice personal interests to benefit others ive always looked on it as a rewarding service per formed by adults despite v occasional verbal abuse voiced by impatient motorists ive always looked on it as a necessary service per formed by adults realizing lives of little ones are at risk five school days a week for me this opportunity is now closer to reality thanks to the coopera tion of town works director paul whitehouse and office assistant lori boyd ive received and completed the necessary forms but it doesnt end there while the need is urgent theres now a practice affect ing everyone dealing with children and a good one each applicant must submit to vulnerable sector screen ing a what you ask yes its called vulnerable sector screening a signed agreement that provides york regional police and other constabularies the authority to check a per sons past through the canadian police informa tion centre the cost is 15 the search takes about two weeks while relatively new the probe pulls no punches without invading the free dom of information and pri vacy act the form spells out various areas of concern that allows agencies to make informed decisions includ ing charges where no finding of guilt was made and inci dents where no charges were laid fair enough while the result is of no personal concern its undoubtedly a worry to par- ents of all children of vulner able age and rightly so for example several years ago while employed as a fulltime journalist i saw two girls both unattended enjoying themselves on a park swing i proceeded to roaming around with jim thomas snap several photos when the wee gals returned home and informed their father he was furious claiming i had no right to take such privi leges without first producing proper identification and gaining parental approval was he right was i wrong regardless for me it was a valuable lesson more recently cold hard facts of adult miscon duct involving minors have come to light in fact hard ly a day goes by we dont read reports of unsavory incidents in daily newspa pers some dating back sev eral decades often these people are trusted role models or role models we assume we can trust boy scout leaders medical doctors and den tists school teachers hock- ey soccer and softball coaches church choir direc tors ministers police offi cers and yes school cross ing guards while some will say such screening is a sad commen tary on our times those clos est to such scenes insist the problem has always been with us but too often unre ported the screening process while certainly not fool proof is a pound of preven tion far better than a pound of cure at least better than a cure for those victimized some often scarred for life should my application be endorsed and i hope that it will ill likely serve a term of probation or be placed on standby before being fully approved thats fine ill regard it as another valuable learning experience a responsibility that shouldnt be taken light- so where will i be sta tioned its too early to tell at this point im just hoping that during a background search the canadian police infor mation centre doesnt find any skeletons hanging in my closet jim thomas is a stouf fville resident who has writ ten for area newspapers for more than 50 years fa tvvhats for lllnner from our frozen entree section well have our chicken parmesan its made with thin asked to do penance which might be some particular prayers or some circumspective thought i look at the eating of green veggies or their further incarnations as a pre- penahce so that you can spend your accumulated points on treats the beauty is that you dont need to confess to get forgiveness because youre already paid up but what if the broccoli actually tastes good its a double k gg q bonus jpjbbh reg 599 serves 3 to 4 when i was at the produce terminal on monday i had mangoes on my shopping list generally i arrive fairly early which leaves me enough time to pick through the cases on a pallet of product in order to set the good stuff aside i began to pick through these mangoes but soon realized that it was hard to choose because they were all really good so i bought them all these are size 7s which means that only seven fit into the standard sized box which makes them big this is good because when you cut a mango you want a reward for your work the bigger the mango the greater
