22 economist sunsuntribune sports saturday sept u 2004 mennos rebels to play deciding game the stouffville mennos and clare- mont rebels split the first two games of their firstround bestofthree oshawa city and district softball league playoff series this week the mennos drew first blood tues day emerging with a 31 road win scott evans scattered three hits and allowed no earned runs while fanning 13 batters over seven innings the mennos took a 1 0 firstinning lead when shawn boadway tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning the mennos added another run when rich burk- holder singled stole second and scored on a single by brett boyd after the rebels replied with a run in x sixth inning the mennos added an insurance run in the seventh when sports digest burkholder singled stole second and scored on a single by evans the rebels evened the series wednesday at memorial park when stouffville resident paul koert surren dered four hits and fanned 13 mennos batters in a 10 win the rebels scored the games lone run in the first inning terry reesor worked 4 23 innings and took the loss with the mennos in summerside pei this weekend for the eastern canadian intermediate a champi onships the deciding game of the series is slated to be played in clare- mont sept 15 youths can play hoops volley at stouffvil secondary a coed volleyball and basketball clinic will be held at stouffville district secondary school on wednesdays from sept 15 until nov 12 jim fletcher longtime physical education teacher and coach at stouf fville district secondary school will conduct the onehour clinics starting at 615 pm youngsters must be between seven and 15yearsofagethecostis149and enrollment is limited for those wishing further informa tion phone fletcher at 9059851542 or email him at fletchesidirectcom swr 7600 kennedy rood 930 am to 5 pm t- wm qjrttgsjssffislaw sports education good combination for hockey star former stouffville resident made mark coaching in wallaceburg oshawa by jim thomas correspondent in his youth arnold schell was a good hockey player at the same time the former stouffville resident applied himself in the classroom these days the 79yearold educator and former hockey star looks back on a career that saw him achieve distinction in both areas despite the fact his initial interest was medicine currently residing in whitby schell graduated from stouf fville continuation school and played high school hockey there before attending the university of toronto although the second world war intervened it didnt dis rupt his puckchasing pursuits he performed with some great players including the robust bill ezinicki later a star with the toronto maple leafs when the war concluded schell returned to university and obtained his degree he then acquired a high school teachers certificate at the ontario college of education schells first school was in wallaceburg where as an instructor in physical education his teams won six titles four in hockey and one each in football and track he continued on staff when a new district school was opened in 1956 for a period of nine years he headed up the physical education department schell assumed similar roles in oshawa at oneill and rs mclaughlin colle- giates he later returned to oneill as principal while at oneill in 1961 he coached the football team to a central ontario sec ondary school athletic asso ciation title two years later he and three fellow staff members captured the ontario teachers curling title he was principal at dr e j donovan collegiate in oshawa retiring in 1981 after 36 years in the teaching pro fession during his stay in wal laceburg schell excelled oh defence with the towns ontario hockey association intermediate b team he was also past president of the junior chamber of commerce following his move to oshawa he served on the executive of the junior b crushmen schells greatest personal honour though occurred in 1994 when he was inducted into the wallaceburg sports hall of fame it was an occasion ill never forget he says these days schell is content to concentrate on golf where on a good day he shoots in the low 90s recently at a course near clearwater fla he fired a holeinone he and wife joan are the parents of one son and two daughters all living in oshawa and six grandchildren if i had it to do all over again i wouldnt change a thing arnold schell retired teacher inducted into wallaceburg sports hall of fame in 1994 learn to speak with confidence for over 50 years wm the christopher leadership course has focused on confidence building effective speaking communication and presentation skills learn to speak more effectively and with confidence during the 1 1 week course which will begin the week of sept 19th in unionville west hill and oshawa for more information or to register call 18004188925 wwwthelumencom
