keeping hazardous trucks off roads in the ballantrae area was behind a truck blitz on aurora road last week this is the second spot check program put in place by councillor phil bannon in con junction with york regional police and the transportation ministry and it wont be the last mr bannon promised prevent accidents every time we take one of these trucks off the road we have prevented another acci dent from happening he said of the 48 vehicles stopped june 23 six were taken off the road for safety infractions in a previous blitz 18 of 43 trucks stopped were pulled off the road for faulty brakes unsafe and overly heavy loads and other safety issues in addition to enforcing speed limits arid checking trucks in the ballantrae area the cooperation of transportation companies is being sought as part of an education and aware ness program hannelore volpe police honour wilson stouffvillearea resident vic wilson has been hon oured by police chief armand la barge for his con tribution to the york region police services board the outgoing board member was first appointed as the citizen representative in january 1999 he applied for the post because of my interest in making sure that we are as safe as we can be he said construction of the com munity safety village at bruces mill conservation area and acquisition of the york regional police heli copter became a reality dur ing his more than five years with the board mr wilson former man ager of the rock band rush was a driving force behind fundraising for the safety village which is slated to open in september almost a dozen smallscale build ings resembling stores fast food outlets and a fire hall are arranged around a sys tem of roads and used by school children from all over york region it was at mr wilsons prompting that the board spent 50000 to buy the vic wilson police board mem ber worked on community safety village at bruces mill amphitheatre for the safety village he was very forthright and vocal on the boards collective bargaining team mr barrow added he was a very good citizen represen tative mr wilson advanced the interests of the region with the canadian association of police boards and the ontario association of police services boards police service board execu tive director connie mahaffy said briefly homegrown bands rock strawberry festival two homegrown rock bands take to the stage on strawberry festival friday the four sides and full frontal bring their original songs and old favourites to latcham hall tomorrow starting at 7 pm members of both bands are students or recent gradu ates of stouffville district secondary school the four sides inspired by the classic rockers of the 1970s and 1980s will play songs made famous by musicians such as the beatles and jimi hendrix they will also play original songs including ventures into reggae sounds written and composed by the members grazianovblpe lead gui tar mike warne vocalsbass guitar brandon wild keyboards and josh montgomery drums the band has played at a variety of locations including latcham hall club rockit in downtown toronto durham college in oshawa and lemonville community centre bass guitarist and singer steven cliff of full frontal wants to keep cre ating music and reaching as many people as possible the bands mix of music with a punk and heavy metal edge reflects the varying interests of band members mr cliff ryan downie on lead guitar adrian walker on rhythm guitar and matt kennedy on drums full frontal has played shows at latcham hall and the kathedral in toronto there is a 5 admission
