more the force took delivery earlier this week of a new 125 million helicopter air2 made a flawless land ing wednesday morning in front of york regions admin istrative building in newmarket impressing onlookers gathered for its unveiling the aircraft offi cially went into service yes terday afternoon this is a great day for crime prevention in york region said dave barrow chairperson of the police services board york region has commit ted 900000 a year in operat ing and financing costs to maintain a program that supporters say promotes safety and helps cops do their job better the program receives top deputy chief retiring york regional police deputy chief of operations terence kelly is retiring deputy chief kelly announced yesterday he will retire in december bringing to a close a 34year career in policing the whitchurch-stouff- ville resident is the second highranking officer to announce his retirement chief robert middaugh will retire in the new year and deputy chief of administra tion armand labarge has been named to succeed him deputy chief kelly said the fact he wasnt named chief had nothing to do with his decision i knew going into the process of selecting a new chief that the police services board wanted a fiveyear commitment he said i was ready to give three years with a twoyear option he said he went through the selection process so i wouldnt secondguess myself after retirement he said he is willing to continue serving past his retirement date if necessary to provide a smooth transi tion for the new chief and the two new deputy chiefs who now must be appointed marks from police brass deputychief armand la barge who will be sworn in as chief of the force in a few months told reporters air2 will continue to be an integral part of operations in york youre going to be seeing the helicopter up there six days a week the deputy chief said in addition to being on regular patrol for several hours each day the helicop ter will be available for emer gencies suspect searches and missing persons inci dents mr la barge said our officers have become very reliant on the helicopter he noted its a view of the world we didnt have before purchase of the fourseat eurocopter ec 120 was approved by york region councillors in june originally police brass had budgeted to buy a new helicopter next year to replace the twoseater donated to the force a couple of years ago but mr barrow said at the time of the availability of the eurocopter an aircraft designed for police use an attractive price was reason enough to make the purchase ahead of schedule the region was able to obtain more than 400000 in tradein credit for the old copter he said the purchase is being funded through debentures ongoing operation of the hel icopter including paying for contracted pilots will be part of the annual police budget in addition to being better suited for police work the new helicopter is quieter than the old model the program has come a long way york police first took to the skies in 1995 in a helicopter loaned to the force for a trial period in june 1999 york joined with durham region cops in an initiative that saw the two forces share a copter
