girls hope to flag down the opposition girls at markham high excited about playing organized flag football for first time by michael laughlin correspondent the fine old tradition of great football teams representing markham district high school will be continued mis spring however it wont be with the marauders senior or junior boys teams steve hartslief who is in his first year as a phys ical education teacher at markham district high school and an assistant coach with the senior boys team last fall has assembled the first girls flag football team hartsuef is ho stranger to starting girls high school flag football programs having done so atvaughah secondary school and newmarket high school before coming to markham district high school the programs have been successful at those schools and hartslief is optimistic the success will continue at markham i had a lot of support for it at markham so it was an easy decision he says of the decision to start a team york region is very competitive but there is no reason why we cant beat any of those teams he adds the rules for flag football are much the same as it is for boys high school football the one major our goal for the first season is very simple we just want to own a winning record with the team we have right now i think it is a very realistic goal exception is that the girls do not tackle but rather pull the flags that players don from their waists the teams play four downs bufthe rest of the rules are based on the canadian football league the marauders inaugural team will feature the duo of jodi gram at running back and cofeen jones as their quarterback although hartslief admits the duo are among his stronger performers he is quick to point out that all of the players on the team have adapted to the game the girls are excited to have the opportunity to be playing football this year and exhibit an eager ness to kick off the season we are all really excited about our opportunity to play says receiver christina balint weve been practising really hard and i think were ready for competition since january- the team hasbeen practising two or three times a week since there arent enough teams in york region to start a league hartslief is trying to get his squad into the scarborough high school league either through league play or tournaments hartslief believes the girls can be successful in their first year of competition he hopes to improve on his 126 coaching record our goal for the first season is very simple we just want to own a winning record with the team we have right now i think it is a very realistic goal he says the marauders are slated to take to the gridiron with a tournament in newmarket on may 4 dont pay that traffic tioicetii skoaajg fr traffic ticket experts is staffed by
