fate of a highrise condominium proposed for an exclusive thornhill neighbourhood is now in the hands of the ontario municipal board with a hearing scheduled for jan 15 1 last- spring residents appeared before markham council to oppose the condominium which they said would destroy their privacy the builder tridel had originally applied to build an 1 1storey building at the corner of bayview and steeles avenues it was later scaled back to eight storeys terraced down to seven at both ends of the building traffic is another major issue since bayview is alreadythe busiest road in york region the application is being opposed by residents living on fairfield place to the north 01d english lane to the east across the valley and whitelaw court to the north across bayview a general public hearing will be held jan 18 at 7 pm in the canada room of the markham civic centre warden avenue and hwy 7 the hearing itself will run from jan 15 to jan 31from 10 am to 430 pm any thornhill resident wishing to speak at the hearing must register a summary of evidence to be given with the municipalitys town clerk by 2 pm jan 17 four groups of ratepayers have banded together to voice their opposi tion at the omb hearing heading the groups will be whitelaw court resident mary bien president of the recently formed association of residents opposed to over development in thornhill south the municipalitys official plan per mits low density housing in the area but bien said the tridel proposal calls for a high density condominium in an area where it is just incompatible with the existing land use markham council turned the condo plan sending the issue to the omb whitelaw court resident eileen petrucco said the area is zoned for two storey single home dwellings if it goes through we would have this concrete mass at the corner which would be pretty well the gateway to thornhill said petrucco there are other parcels of land that are also for sale along bayview and we are concerned this would start a prece dent petrucco said the condominium would also cause a lot of traffic conges tion even now it is impossible to get out on the street in the morning said petrucco what would it be like if a 155unit high rise goes up there with approxi mately two cars per unit we formed a corporation and hired a lawyer we have been meeting on a regular basis to prepare our presenta tion said
