problem thats been occur- ring for years on house- league softball nights at memorial park wssa president june doner informs me an accident of major consequences is just waiting to happen as a result of cars parked illegally on rose ave and burkholder st the cars are being parked on both sides of these streets posing an enormous potential safety threat not to mention the fact that theyre a nui sance for residents who sometimes find their dri veways blocked by these cars the primary danger lies in the hazard posed to young children on their way to and from playing tball or fivepitch at franklin park it is feared the youngsters might suddenly dart out between two parked cars and be hit by a car driving past theres going to be an accident june predict ed theres no protection if a child runs out we have to protect the kids she said her association is informing all coach es in hopes they will warn the parents of the chil dren on their teams- june said fire trucks would never be able to pass through the streets because of cars parked on both sides there are no parking signs she said but theyre being ignored yvonne hurst at the town offices said council agreed at a recent meeting to instruct that cars sports notes bruce stapley parked illegally on the streets is ticketed its causing a very danger ous situation she said june suggests parents drop off their kids and their lawn chairs in front of the park then drive on to the town pool parking lot or the parking lot just east of park dr across from the main diamond a canada day classic canada day is the date for the 1998 ontario amateur softball association oasa annual scholarship classic in port perry the event pits the 1997 canada games cham pionship ontario youth fastball team against members of the 1989 and 93 canada games titlewinning ontario squads funds raised go to the oasa scholarship fund stouffvilles paul koert and evan boyd will be suiting up with the 97 championship team scott evans and craig crawford who played together on the 1990 stouffville merchants juniors will be with the 8993 outfit omha lures corporate sponsor the ontario minor hockey association will announce a major corporate sponsorship agree ment and unveil the corresponding new logo at its annual meeting saturday at the regal constella tion hotel in etobicoke the omha came up with its inaugural guide and fact book for the 199798 season complete with a half page devoted to the stouffville clip pers listed among notable clippers graduates are keith acton and brad may abbot anticipates an exciting contest st from page 23 ifs going to be a dandy game he said evans and crawford along with tim cox of the 1989 team have all played with the national teams program the game is scheduled to begin at 2 pm at port perrys lakeside softball com plex the 5 admission price will go in its entirety to the scholarship fund abbots loyalties will be divided for the match he was head coach of the 1997 ontario team that took the gold in mani toba and was coach and manager with the 1989 and 93 outfits he recently gave up his position as chair of the national teams program a post he held since 1987 to take on the role of manager of the ontario youth team through the year 2001 decline is cyclical an ardent softball supporter abbot is convinced that what is seen by some as a general decline in the games popularity in ontario is merely a cyclical occur rence the game he said is always strongest where there are people commit ted to promoting it while overall oasa registration from the mite through midget is slightly down this season the numbers have stayed about the same over the past decade he cited abbot noted there has been a drop in the number of junior level teams this but suggested the teams remaining are strong the cost factor makes it difficult to field a junior team he pointed out anywhere from 14 to 15 teams will contest this years oasa junior mens eliminations with well over 20 midget teams going after the oasa crown the number of peewee and bantam teams contesting the provincial titles at their respective levels will also be some where in the 20s he added but there are a lot of teams out there that choose not to go to the eliminations he conceded that a drop in the number of adult fastpitch teams has served to lessen the incentive for young people to take up the game we used to have many more adult teams when i was in markham a few years back the kids would watch and that would make them want to stick with the game abbot said its important to take a proactive approach in trying to keep young people interested in the game he also said interest in adult softball should be given a boost when the eastern canadian intermediate mens champi onships take place in port perry this sep tember abbot acknowledged that fan interest in softball has dwindled attribut ing the drop off to the changing lifestyle of the 1990s all sports are going through this peo ples leisure time has become less they are working longer hours at their jobs or in their own business the hours just arent there but abbot is confident the attraction of players from three of ontarios canada games championship youth teams will lure fans to port perry on canada day bethesda sprin farp a u pick or we pick strawberries 5612 bethesda road 12 mile east of 48 1 mile north of stouffville road phone 905640 ressor
