be launched at hospita in january the child and adoles cent mental health programs at york county hospital will begin offering a regional eating disorders service for children and adolescents up to the age of 10 who suffer from severe anorexia nervosa and bulim ia nervosa this regional service will provide an intensive day treatment program to children and adolescents suffer ing from these debilitating eating disorders as well the service will include a prevention and education program and a research compo nent last april the ministry of health announced that additional funding in the amount of 302500 would be provided to support the establish ment of a regional eating disorders service at the newmarket hospital which will focus on the treatment of children and adolescents with severe anorexia nervosa this addi tional program complements the hospitals current outpatient treat ment program for bulimic girls the need for the service was iden tified following extensive consulta tion with community providers educators parents and adolescents support from the york regional district health council which rec ognized the need for increased local services was also received we know from experience that the entire family is affected when a child suffers from a chronic eating disorder as a great deal of time and energy must be committed to a structured treatment plan to be able to provide this service in new market is a significant benefit for the residents of york region and simcoe county said hospital vice- president pat norman the eating disorder service will be staffed by a multidisciplinary team including child psychiatry psychology social work nursing clinical dietitian and child youth worker referrals to the eating disorder service must be made by a physi cian and will be accepted in janu ary the physician will remain responsible for their clients until the program opens eating disorders can be chronic debilitating illnesses and it is esti mated that ten per cent of all cases willend in death due to suicide or complications of starvation said dr lcora pinhas medical director community for the eating disorders service we are therefore very excited to be
