problem ohara said we all knbw we ran out of miracles this sum mer and a serious incident finally did occur the money will be used to hire six addition al court security officers who will not carry guns but will patrol the building and man two new metal detectors provided by the attorney generals office the officers who will earn between 37000 to 45000 a year plus benefits will cost york region taxpayers about 250000 a year the officers bring the total court security manpower to 26 including seven armed con stables and a sergeant the additional officers fall short of police oharas suggestion of an armed police offi cer for each of the buildings 20 courtrooms but york insp peter thompson said placing an armed constable in every courtroom is beyond the departments financial capacity every judge would like a police officer in their courtroom thats just not possible he said in sensitive cases where violence is possi ble judges can request special security mea sures such as the presence of heavily armed specialtactics units detsgt gary colangelo the commander of the court bureau said the key to preventing violent attacks with weapons in the court house is controlling access metal detectors at the main entrance will allow police to screen everyone who enters the building for guns and knives new technology will allow police using the metal detectors to find concealed weapons without forcing everyone entering the build ing to empty their pockets of keys and coins the metal detectors should be in place with in three months other entrances to the building including the eagle street entrance wiches attacker used have already been closed to the general public part of the problem facing police is the building must be secured for 14 hours although the courthouse is only open
