shocking there are hidden dangers lurking in our ground and our water sometimes theyre even hidden by big government- controlled corporations like ontario hydro the latest news exploding over the airwaves and front pages concerns ontario hydros 18yearlong silence about tritium leaking into the groundwater from the pickering nuclear generating station its bad enough that the groundwater near the durham community has been contaminated by a carcinogenic for that long without authorities being notified but this is the second time in a month that ontario hydro has been identi fied as a major polluter in early july a report was released saying hydro has qui etly and illegally discharged tonnes of metal particles into lake ontario over 25 years these incidents are receiving media attention against the even bigger news story that ontario has been deemed the thirdlargest air polluter in canada and the united states what can local residents do in the face of these provincial and national crimes let your mpp and mp know that youre shocked and angry that such pollution goes on tell them to urge their respective governments to clean up their acts enacting stiffer penalties and passing regulations with real teeth our children future voters are drinking and breath ing this stuff its got to stop who really poses a grterthiw to ourchilpren ntmfr smalltime rock creep bistlnie industrial foluftler nu j bahai event provides respite from bigotry tomorrow aug 6 ill join about 25 women in a salute to russia the event is cooking culture and conversation ccc and youre invit ed hosted by the bahai women of stouffville this triple c gettogether takes place once a month and is open to women from stouffville uxbridge and markham ccc is my favorite thing about stouffville its a gift i give myself i know ill leave with a feel good feel ing a very happy tummy and an invi tation to return ccc was launched in april in the spirit of service and friendship our local bahai women hold it to promote greater understanding and unity be tween cultures and people the common denominators of the threehour gathering are food sharing and respecting each other as women and as individuals all women are wel come if youd like to join us at ccc call me at the tribune at 6402100 ccc takes place at jaleh victorys rural off the record joan ransberry home on kennedy road and bloom- ington road the home is elegant and jaleh s welcome is both warm and sin cere the guests are from diverse cultures and from all walks of life some of us were raised in poor homes and some laundry adventures in wilds of france welcome to martha stewart goes primitive a summer adventure for the intrepid traveller its hard to imagine i know but i have irrefutable evidence that one can survive for several weeks without appliances which are considered basic necessities in our leadingedge civi lization in the old world many of the natives while apparently intelligent and friendly muddle through with out the assistance of the maytag man or one of the machines he never needs to service ever eager to live as common folk do for the duration of my holiday at least i steeled myself to get by with out washing machines computers- and the home shopping network did you know its possible to wash clothing by hand neither did i all it takes is a box of soap powder warm water and a vat of what my mother calls elbow grease first you place the plug in the sink and turn on thetap next you sprinkle in the requisite amount of soap flakes and agitate to dissolve then you drop in the articles of clothing and wash thoroughly jqiisjfguiiesadjstiegsjiig amqiinjpf kates corner kate gilderdale effort which nevertheless pales in comparison with the wringing out process after an endless succession of rinses you are ready to induce heart failure and limp wrist syndrome by divesting the garments of as much water as pos sible manually this involves brute force and the kind of muscles i havent seen since my granny was head of household laundry across the pond granny i am convinced could have extracted blood from a stone merely by looking at it she could certainly wrest a whole lake full of water from a stout pair of newlylaundered drawers with the greatest of ease and would have laughed uproariously at her grand daughters pitiful efforts with her marks spencer underwear having done my pathetic best the next problem was how to dry the soggy results fortunately one qf my k panions was a genius atr coping with just about any eventuality and it was she who came up with the amazing emergency washing line patent pending attaching one end to a handy tree she quickly discerned that the line was too short to reach the house drawing on her legendary career as a girl guide she unearthed an ancient stepladder fastening the other end of the line securely to the top this worked until we placed a large dripping sheet on it whereupon the ladder listed alarmingly in the direc tion of terra firma walking calmly to the wood pile our own martha stewart selected a couple of sturdy logs and placed them on the two bottom steps we got to our third wet towel before another log was needed and thus it was that we went back to nature while maintaining a freshly laundered if not entirely crisp appearance all our clothes took on a decidedly warped crumpled air which no amount of smoothing out could entirely disguise on the other hand they blended in nicely with our aging visages as wrin kles r us set out for another delightful day sur la plage or dans la patisserie in the wilds of northern ecance tl were not some are well off some are not some are young s some not so young some are formally educated some are not at this special gathering money or youth or formal education do not mat ter were there to enjoy a most pleas ant experience and to be reminded that each culture is wonderful as the bahais point out ccc gives us a chance to step beyond looking for common elements and actually appre ciating and enjoying what makes our world so beautiful its our differences as each visitor arrives at jalehs home shes given supplies and tools shes then encouraged to tap the child within to make a name tag some of the name tags are very creative it serves as an ice breaker it works we then receive a fiveminute wel come and introduction to ccc and the serious business of food begins the featured country is introduced and the cooking demonstration gets under way a full meal is prepared served and of course eaten the entire process is relaxing its good fun paper and pens are provided to allow the guests to jot down the recipes and information on ingredients theres plenty of laughter by the time we take our place at the table seeds of friendships have been planted so far japan iran and jamaica have been featured at the table guests meanwhile are from all over the world were born in such countries as india africa iran pak istan guinea ireland and canada i will always carry a soft spot for stouffville it was here that i was introduced to the bahais im proud to call myself a friend of the bahais while attending ccc the absolute absence of gossip pettiness and big otry leaves me
