research and control in ontario said this is an incredible project we have ontario rabies unit and aviation staff working closely with the texans who come from the department of health depart ment of agricultures animal damage control the texas national guard and gets along well and the project runs very smoothly it is not unlike the annual ontario rabies baiting pro gram he noted this is just done on a bigger scale like ontario though the project runs seven days a week dawn to dusk this is also very interesting coun try said maclnnes it is flat and typ ical chaparral with lots of cactus and mesquite trees theres grazing lands and within 20 minutes flying east were over the coastal plains of the gulf of mexico and to the west mountains and the rio grande there are more coyotes per square kilometre in texas than there are red foxes per square kilometre in ontario other wildlife abound in texas as well on any given threehour bait drop ping flight the people on the aircraft report seeing whitetailed deer ante lope elk wild pigs and goats and there are millions of birds said maclnnes texas is on the southern migratory fly way and large numbers of birds winter in the lone star state as one of the mnr pilots found out when a flock of smaller birds flew into the aircraft and six evident strikes showed up on the nose and windscreen the texans jokingly threatened to report him to a conservation officer for exceeding the bag limit these are wonderful people to work with said maclnnes they go out of their way to be helpful and everybody is so pleasant and courteous including the local residents working in hotels restaurants and shops since this is the last year of ontarios two year contract and there could be a couple more years baiting for coyote rabies plus several more years baiting for gray fox rabies the texans will have to retender the job and ontario will have to bid again we definitely want to see this project through to suc cessful completion said maclnnes right now ontario is being posi tioned in a very positive light as a world leader in rabies research and largescale aerial vaccination this could lead to additional projects with other states in the northeastern us laura bigler who heads up rabies research at cornell university ithaca ny and who is a driving force behind the proposed vaccination projects in the us midatlantic region is very keen on utilizing ontario aerial vacci nation baiting to fight raccoon rabies in new york pennsylvania ohio new hampshire and maine this particular strain of raccoon rabies is threatening to move into canada through ontario quebec and new brunswick said maclnnes it is definitely in our best interests to sup- port the fight against this disease in the us and eliminate it there before we have to contend with it here ontario mnr aircraft made limited vaccine bait drops in new york state in 1995 and 96 with financial support from quebec and state officials are very impressed with the results
