st the tribune tuesday may 1 5 1 997 p 5 young voter concerned about education jobs the tribune is following the federal election through the eyes of four local groups of people who look to the govern ment on varied issues today we introduce you to john lambersky a teenager who will be voting for the first time in this election he represents the concerns of youth in this election also being profiled for their opinions are the hul- sofs a farm family the rogers a senior couple and the hargraves a working couple joan ransberry staff reporter on june 2 john lambersky of stouffville will experi ence a milestone hell become a firsttime voter in the brand new riding of oak ridges since the stouffville district secondary school student recently marked his 18th birth day hes especially keen on the election campaign if we lived in a perfect world oak ridges candidates and the party leaders would have ability a sense of equality charisma and courage he said lambersky is however a little sad about the relationship between todays political parties and the young voter theres a great deal of cyni cism from my peers he said there have been enough unfulfilled campaign promises recently to last a life time but i dont think that their outward complacency is going to last all that long you cant hide your head in the sand forever since the grade 12 student has his sights set on univer sity how the local candidates treat education is noted while lambersky would prefer to avoid major tuition hikes hes not upset about the cost of learning post sec ondary education is still accessible to canadians wealthy or otherwise he said indeed canada deserves a strong leader lambersky insisted i would like to see a leader who has a world wide vision including a sense of where canada belongs globally if we dont continue to be competitive in a glob al way we may lose our high standard of living when it comes to morality lambersky holds a very strong position its too simple to say honesty or morality is a good judge of a leader i would rather have a prime minister john lambersky who is an adulterer than a puritan with limited abilities while employment rates high on lamberskys list he doesnt advocate job creation programs i prefer to have a government that provides a healthier economy rather than job creation projects he said overall lambersky is optimistic about canadas future were on the verge of tackling our deficit our economy is picking up and the job market is looking positive for the future i think finance minister paul martin is right we need to start thinking of very long term goals a quick fix or massive spending on jobs wont help over a 25year election 97 term as the fiveweek campaign continues lambersky is still undecided as to which party he will vote for but i have all but narrowed the choices down to the conservatives or the liberals i dont see any reason to vote reform or ndp they are too volatile to have as a national government he
