ts ai i ii- i iwirfif t rf4 tribune thursday may 15 1997 st the tribune entertainment 1 is i i i i i i jii t if 4 fathers day falls short behind the scenes with a comedy duo as poten tially potent as robin williams and billy crystal youd figure fathers day would be a sure fire laugh riot but no such luck williams and crystal star as pair of very different mendale williams a weepy wannabe writer and jack crystal an emotionless lawyerwho team up to find a young boy they both think is their son and along the way learn a bit about themselves and to appreciate each others way of life their quest takes them on a west coast journey from san francisco to san diego to los angeles the reason for the confusion you see is that the boys mother played by nas- tassia kinski told them both they were the father in the screen scene stuart green hopes of getting more people on the job meanwhile the boys real dad gets side tracked into a ridiculous comic adventure on his way to join the search and as if things werent bad enough jack is also trying to keep his third marriage togeth er with his new bride julia louis dreyfuss despite what could have been these two gifted comics are left floundering in a cloy ing muddled and worst of all unfunny movie but looking at the credits you begin to get an idea of why its as bad as it is the director is ivan reitman who with a few exceptions has made a career of pumping out bland and generic comedies the writ ers are lowell ganz and babaloo mandel who are responsible for some of the most pedestrian family affair films ever made and the pro ducer is joel silver the man behind most of those mindless recycled action films that rake in millions of dollars fathers day is proof that all the onscreen talent in the world cant make up for lack of talent behind the scenes fathers day billy crystal and robin williams discover they may or may not be fathers as they search for the same boy in california star power jack billy crystal is trying to keep his third marriage intact to his new wife julia louis dreyfuss in fathers day which is cur rently playing and also stars robin williams and nastassia kinski artist maloneys paintings to be displayed in ireland kate gilderdale correspondent this summer a selection of works from sheila maloneys recent highly acclaimed exhibition at the latcham gallery will cross the atlantic to ire land an irish canadian familys story commemo rates the great famine of 184748 which caused mass starvation and a huge wave of emigration much of it to the united states and canada i have painted as narrative and event paintings the towns villages landscapes and farms of the people in their family moments and individuals in their joys griefs and travels observed the artist the paintings are of the emigration of my irish forefamilies from both northern ireland and ire land their leaving from cork and then sailing ships to canada and then to their homesteads and the life they encountered from that time to the present seventeen of the 60 works from her latcham gallery show will be shipped to ireland the exhibition is going to a place called the famine museum at strokestown park in county roscommon said maloney it will be on display at the museum during july and august and an irishcanadian day will be held there july 2 at the time of the famine this was an estate which was illegally held by the english she explained during his attempts to remove 8000 tenants from the estate and put them on desperately overcrowded and unsanitary ships bound for cana da the brutal landlord denis mahon was assassi nated i had heard of the town through a retired profes sor of celtic studies who suggested i write to them about my paintings i got a letter inviting me to show them and im in the process of making arrangements to ship them around the middle of june she said meanwhile she is working on a number of new paintings which will be shown at nancy pooles studio on hazelton avenue in toronto this october f
