st weekender february t irrp 3 water concerns prompt call for development freeze by joan ransberry staff reporter while a rookie councillor is calling for a threeyear moratorium on housing development for the ballantrae and musselmans lake area a plan for a large subdivision complete with an 18- hole golf course on aurora road near hwy 48 will be unveiled feb 11 a proposal submitted by schicken danz bros ltd to the town in 1995 lists 660 housing units however ward 2 councillor mike watson said he expects the number of homes will be about 1000 the areas new communal water sys tem may not be able to handle such a demand watson has suggested last week whitchurchstouffville council gave schickendanz the go- ahead to build 65 houses in phase 1 on the land located behind the ballantrae community centre a model home is going up now while sales begin this spring im not worried about how this phase 1 development will impact on the water system stressed watson tina schickendanz spokesperson for schickendanz said the plan including the exact number of units will be pre sented to council were very pleased with it said schickendanz the family has owned the 375 acre land since the 1970s bob forhan jr representative of schickendanz will outline plan details at the meeting its expected that council will also hear more about an eightacre parcel of park land we need to follow up on this morato rium call forhan told the tribune td like to see what impact it would have on the bulk of the property but then its only three years considering whats planned it may take much longer said forhan it will be a busy meeting council will also hear why watson wants a freeze on development clean water and lots of if continues to be the driving force behind the motion stressed watson watson is not convinced that the new 8 million communal water system can accommodate additional major housing development schickendanz has no worries that the regional well linked to the newly installed water system can accommo date a large subdivision the well can hold far beyond what is proposed said schickendanz still a development freeze does not sit well with schickendanz i dont see any reason for a threeyear freeze she said council should look at development as individual property and carry on a moratorium may not have a crip pling impact on a developer three years is not a long time in a developers world schickendanz agreed ward 1 councillor mike watson point ed out that the call for a freeze is not unique im picking up the ball where ed the late councillor ed lyons left off said watson just days before he died on oct 8 concern about the quality and quantity of water in the area lead lyons to present a sixpoint notice of motion calling for a development freeze ballantrae
