last month by senior town staff to muskoka which was revealed in a recent edition of the tribune weekender guy gastonguay wanted to know the purpose of the trip and how much it had cost taxpayers if this came up before you on council what are you going to do to ensure it doesnt happen again fran sainsbury said that the provinces social contract required that one per cent of operating costs be set aside each year for staff training and that the trip was paid for out of those funds she defended the retreat as part of a consensusbuilding exer cise similar to that employed by many corporations i ice pad and are stymied until they get some direction from council answering a question regarding park facilities in ballantrae alles said park trust fund dollars could possi bly go to the area one resident asked why all the attention was on other pro jects when the recreation cen tre was still a work-in- progress fran sainsbury said there will be nothing added to the centre until the first phase of the fivephase project is paid off next year she said staff cuts dont put money in reserve funds for projects and that staff have already been let go under the social contract legislation sainsbury said tax bikes are inevitable if resi dents are to receive everything they want you can have anything you want she joked it only costs money sainsbury said a park in bal lantrae is on hold until devel opment comes but pledged to look at another location ken prentice promised one of the towns major projects eg library expansion second ice pad etc would be complet ed in the next term if he was elected and that he would seek ways to utilize the water reserve fund tm asking groups to come forward with their business proposals in hand he said we will do at least one project and have started fundraising for a second in three years if i am elected the mayoralty candidates were asked what dealings they had had with individuals and groups concerned about the water survey and if they had been asked for help sainsbury said all the deal ings she had with the mess group took place in the council chamber and that no one came to her office to request help tm not good at esp she said 1 would have helped if id been asked prentice said he approached people coming to council meet ings and met with mess he charged that the towns known for years the water was of insufficient quality the people who approached him at work said emmerson all received a similar answer he recommended they go to council and keep trying to get more information alles said he had spoken with individuals on his cam paign travels and the mes sage they gave him was lets get on with it council needs to take a stand said alles to move forward on this issue and get it resolved once and for all wanting answers mj perry of vandorf asks a question of the candidates at the vandorf all candidates meeting mon day night about the school boards zero tolerance policy r photosjoerdwtteveen water issue tops on list in ward 2 ward 2 candidates ed lyons and richard farmer agree that the towns handling of the bal- lantraemusselman lake water survey was less than perfect but they disputed an idea to kill two birds with one stone farmer said since streets will have to be dug up to put in a water system it makes sense to try and do at least one other job at the same time he said sewage pipes could be laid for future hook up and suggested that a joint venture with con sumers gas might get a gas line laid as well if youre going to rip up the street put in gas too he said adding that a strong council would have more leverage to work out a deal lyons said discussions hes had with consumers gas have shown it would not be possible to do a joint project as far as the gas is con cerned forget about it he said i think were concerned with water and sewers lyons said ways must be looked at to lower the costs of the system for residents some people feel that they could be hammered for thou sands of dollars they cannot afford he said lyons suggested the project be extensively tendered that spending elsewhere in the town should be curtailed and that developers should pay a greater share of the cost farmer was challenged on his knowledge of the area since he is a recent arrival and asked what hed done to educate him self it doesnt take a rocket sci entist to realize theres a prob lem in the community said farmer rather than just talk about it im willing to do some thing about it mikeruta kids earn extra money become a carrier today call 6402100 stouffville attention flyer advertisers we can deliver
