this weekends londonsaunders volleyball classic could give the squad a chance to glimpse the competition they will encounter if they advance to the provincial aa finals next month the high level tourna ment is an annual showcase for the top level aa and aaa senior squads in the province and is considered a prelude to the ontario federation of school athletic association championships in late november the spartans who have qualified for the provincials in each of the past seven years will be seeded for possible provincial play at the london competition said coach jim fletcher he noted that while he doesnt expect his team to win the tournament which includes higher rated aaa outfits as well as aa crews it will help his boys improve by playing against superior competiton it will toughen us up said fletcher theres going to be a strong contingent of teams there the spartans tuned up for the tournament by defeating port perry high school in a tough threegame exhibition set on tuesday the spartans prevailed 1715 1416 1510 over the host port perry team which fletcher said stands to capture the durham aa title next month fletcher praised the middle hitting of graham crowder the hitting of shawn sargeant and the setting of chris lightfoot in the match with port perry he was also impressed by the play of ian ellis and jason whitelaw the team is showing char acter as it continues to improve he noted were really coming along and theyre a nice bunch of guys who take a lot of initiative around the school the previous week the spartans defeated sutton district high school their main rival for the york aa title 1614 815 1614 in a closely contested set the win made up for an earlier loss to sutton in york region secondary school athletic association league play the spartans lost to sutton in the york final last fall but rallied to down the lake simcoe squad in the durham york secondary school athletic association final the dyssaa show down has been eliminated this year with york and durham winners advancing directly to the provincial championships it looks like the ofsaa qualifier could be another barn burner this year predicted fletcher noting how closely matched his spartans are with the sutton outfit spartans run to the york title the stouffville district secondary school crosscoun try team is back on the throne the spartans pushed them selves to the limit at the york region secondary school athletic association cross country championships at the boyd conservation area in woodbridge coming home with the overall title on wednesday the spartans which had been denied the crown since finishing first six years in a row through the late 1980s had 38 points compared with secondplace unionville high schools 34 the spartans were led by its junior boys team which placed first in its category chris weatherill was first in the individual junior boys standing with teammate luke anderson third the schools senior boys team led by todd gilham who placed ninth out of 75 runners was second in its division both the junior and senior boys teams qualified for the ontario federation of school athletic association champi onships as did sarah cliff whose fourthplace finish helped the spartans senior girls team to a thirdplace showing allison mcdonald led the schools midget girls team to a thirdplace finish ian hazelwoods seventh- place finish helped the midget boys finish fourth while maran lougheed qualified for the provincial finals while leading the junior girls into fourth place were back in the saddle said an ecstatic dave connell cocoach of the spartans team connell who has been push ing for the stouffville squad to regain the title for the last four years said he thought his team took some of their com petitors by surprise i think a couple of the big schools went into it with their noses up in the air but at the end they had their noses out of joint the ofsaa championships will be held in ancaster on nov 5 randolph not horsing around riding a horse she bought out of a pasture last spring an 18yearold stouffville resi dent managed to place sixth in a prominent united states equestrian competition earlier this month lindsay randolph a student at stouffville district secondary school managed the feat while competing in the 1518yearold hunter under saddle event at the all american quarter horse congress in columbus ohio on oct 9 billed as the largest breed horse show in the world with a total of 12000 entries the event attracts riders from north america europe and australia randolph was competing in a field of 133 riders she was aboard her own horse stars out which she personally broke and trained randolph has been riding since she was five years of age figuring to do well on ice samantha campbell and james guinane assists went to alex bollo 2 guinane nick hawkins and brian taylor saturday in peterborough the clippers came back from a 20 deficit to earn a 22 tie carruthers and guinane clicked for the clippers from michael root taylor and carruthers sunday the clippers were hot again coming up with a 53 win over port hope carruthers netted a pair with solos going to bollo taylor and jordan smalley assists went to taylor 2 guinane 2 root and bollo y runners finish fifth at provincial championships the stouffville track club tyke boys team was fifth over all at the ontario mta cross country championships last weekend in wingham ont the team was made up of justin vanditzhuyzen russell patterson and john robbins lukas williams of the stouffville clubs atom boys team was 10th overall in the 2006metre course clocking a time of seven minutes and 30 seconds candace robbins of the stouffville club was 29th in the atom girls race mark robbins was entered in the mite boys event
