p4 weekender october 1 1994 st legion makes common sense decision the stouflville branch of the royal canadian legion voted 75 per cent in favor of amend ing its dress code bylaw to allow sikhs to wear tradition al headgear this in 1994 should not be news but it is and what makes it all the more news worthy is the fact that 75 per cent voted to allow the amend ment in real numbers that translates to 11 members who opposed the amendment thats 11 people who do not recognize that sikhs have the right to wear what their reli gion decries as the equivalent to a catholic cross around the neck that means that 11 peo ple who have veteran status do not wish to recognize the efforts made by the gurkhas in the last world war they do not wish to acknowledge that the gurkha forces were some am w h viewpoint andrew mair of the bravest soldiers to have ever fought undertook some of the most dangerous missions lost thousands of men in the course of a war that should not have concerned them and that many of these men saved the lives of countless current members of the royal canadian legion the very people who would now see them banned from entering the sanctity of a club room ever since this issue broke out across the country last year it has become much clearer as the weeks went on that the initiators of the ban on turbans the chapter of the legion located in calgary was made up of 40yearolds who not only had never seen active duty but most certainly had never slogged through swamps and through burning jungles alongside the sikh reg iments if they had they most cer tainly would never have stooped to proposing such a bylaw in the first place the fact that the national body of the legion would put the issue to a vote showed further blink- ered thinking so to have to put the issue to a vote at the local level should never have taken place however it has been an eyeopening experi ence some of the legion vets the tribune spoke with after adam by brian basset the announcement said they were pleased the motion to amend passed but were a lit tle startled that there would be anyone who could not see the obvious racism sheltered in the guise of the rules of tradition there may be one day when we shouldnt have to offer the stouffville legion congratula tions for making a common- sense and justifiable decision but the 11 naysayers have insured that such a day is not yet at hand markham economist and sun stouffville tribune uxbridge tribune weekender edition a metroland community newspaper patricia pappas publisher jo ann stevenson etntorinciitf paula whats real from what isnt i mean dont get down on yourself about it youre not nuts the movie business is consider a brand new john candy movie came out a few weeks back its called wagons east and stars canadas favorite funnyman as the besotted buck- skinned leader of a wagon train of settlers in the mid1800s the hook is theyre heading east to get away from the wild west which is a pretty funny premise and should make for an entertaining flick especially with rolypoly candy lolling around in the saddle theres just one prob lem john candys dead whats more he died more than half a year ago on the set more than half of wagons east was shot after the star of wagons east was no longer available for camera work how did they do that simple hollywood faked it they used several john candy lookalikes with their hats pulled low or their backs turned they hired an actor who could imitate his voice to fill in the necessary dialogue hey presto candy rides again such reincarnation isnt even new earlier this year another star brandon lee was killed in a gun accident while filming a movie called crow the produc ers didnt even have 30 per cent of the film in the can when lee died they needed his face and his body in at least seven crucial sequences in order to make the movie believable could they pull it off sure with the help of a little computer magic computer experts isolated lees face on one screen then painted it digitally on to the neck of the body of another actor who then per formed the movements brandon lee would have had he been alive end product lee in a scene in which he never appeared there are lots of other exam ples did you see forrest gump you remember the double amputee gary sinise in real life gary sinise can do the hully gully better than you arid i hes got two perfectly use able legs they were amputated basic black arthur black in the film true lies the open ing scene shows a beautiful man sion beside an unspoiled lake which sits at the foot of a series of snowcapped mountains and its a fake a collage the mansion sits in newport rhode island the mountains are part of the sierra nevada in california and the lake is nowhere at all computer ani mators created it out of electrons the weird thing is when you look at the scene you cant tell any of that whaf s it mean the fact that the truthreality divide is blurring even more im not sure but its pretty scary we are being systematically taught not to believe our eyes and were learning a survey a few years back showed that 12 percent of americans dont believe astronauts ever landed on the moon they believed it was an elaborate pr exercise orches trated by nasa choreographers somewhere in wilderness arizona what happens when we no longer trust anything we see well well become more passive i guess like graduate couch potatoes that too may be hap pening last month a crowd of tourists at the montsaintmichel abbey in france stood by like a herd of holsteins and watched a woman drown trying to save her child the mother was walking with her six year old along the beach when her child fell into a waterfilled hole as the frantic mother tried to save it at least a dozen tourists stood and watched without trying to assist her or to call for help they probably thought it was a minidrama for visitors if they thought about it at all finally rescuers from the town managed to save the girl they couldnt reach her mother and one of the tourists an l6mfi9si american lugging a vcr was heard to murmur i got the whole by computer for the film only thing on tape w hwfiiin iiw w 9
