chris lamont john tamlin and joe cherkas darts league a success sport notes in these days of athletic unrest when big time sport is all tied up in crippling labor disputes and small town sport is hampered by chronic facilities shortages it is refreshing to report on a local league that has almost doubled in size going into its second season yet despite the meteoric growth of the stouffville dart league theres no clamoring for more money from greedy owners or play ers and theres more than enough dart boards and restaurantbars to satisfy the demand in fact local swimming pool contractor and recreational games sup plier betz pools has been most cooperative in provid ing the necessary equipment to the darts league at fair prices reported league presi dent and founder shirley hellyer the other day hellyer phoned to proudly relate that her organization which came to be as the result of a passing comment she made while watching a darts game in a stouffville watering hole last year had gone from six to 11 teams in its sophomore season each team plays out of a barrestaurant with chariots family restaurant the earl of whitchurch angies eatery and stouffville billiards joining last years establishments which included the greens spyder joes and fulltertons place with six to eight players per team this represents a sporting night out every tuesday night for upwards of 88 men and women in fact one crew playing out of the chariots location is made up exclusively of women accen tuating the gender equity aspect of the league hellyer said the big draw lies in the fact that there is virtually no travel involved as there is in other leagues such as the york region darts league that means when the weather gets rough or if someone should consume one too many throughout a course of a night of serious dart throwing they dont have to worry about driving home to another town in many cases theyll be able to walk home the prez also said she will once again be playing the role of roving official rather than actually playing herself this season hellyer maintains shes quite happy to bar hop col lecting results and statistics while doing the rounds of all seven league venues as for people still looking to join she said things are pret ty well at capacity for this season which began in mid september and runs through march but hold that thought next year there may be another run on franchises for if pro sport continues to go down the tubes it could be the only game around am the whitchurchstouffville minor hockey association rep season kicks into gear this coming week as
