clinic at the legion is going to be a piece of cake the womens auxiliary of stouffville legion hall 459 invites partidpating donors to celebrate 30 years of saving lives by enjoying a slice of delicious anniversary cake courtesy of mayor fran sainsbury the town of whitchurch- stouffville and sinful sweets in success square we started out with one clinic in 1964 recalled marion murphy one of six auxiliary members who have been involved in organizing the clinics from day one we ran two a year from 65 until 72 when we started to do three in 1987 the number was increased to the present four which are held upstairs in the legion hall on 9th line north in january april july and october originally the clinics took place downstairs at the legion and 139 units were collected at the first one in 1964 sadly the number of donors has not increased significantly as the population has grown murphy observed youd think the numbers would grow but ive heard all clinics are down ironically while factors such as aids have undoubtedly played their part in discouraging donations stringent regulations as a result of these problems have made donating and receiving blood safer than ever before weve reached 200 donations once or twice and in 1990 we had 236 said fellow auxiliary member aurelia smith at our last clinic in april we had 139 these days the volunteers who register patients must take an examination as well as periodic refresher courses they are also required to sign forms guaran teeing that all donor information will remain strictly confidential researchers have recently discovered the body replaces blood faster than was originally thought and it is hoped this will lead to increased donations said smith as of may 1st you can give blood every 56 days instead of every 70 days while a lot of donors attend sporadically one local individual has given more than 100 units said smith we also have a number who have given 35 to 50 donations anyone who donates 35 50 75 or 100 times is honored by the red cross at a special day in april organizing clinics is a major undertaking requiring approximately 35 volun teers whose jobs range from telephone calls and registration to providing refreshments for donors among the most faithful supporters of the clinic are the masons of richardson lodge 136 said murphy and its always been the ladies auxiliary that runs it we never have outsiders we pay for all the food the ladies auxiliary sponsors it and the legion pro vides the hall smith added the auxiliary also provides a babysitting service to encourage young mothers to attend last year we were presented with a citation from the red cross murphy said in it the auxiliary was recognized for its dedicated work and outstanding support to the red cross blood donor program when you donate blood your donation can save a child with leukemia an acci dent victim or someone with a blood disorder its a gift thats so easy to give yet it can mean the difference between life and death other founding mem bers of the clinic who are still active in the auxiliary are doris farthing mary hamerston marjorie smith and aldine sinclair fridays clinic runs from 2 to 830 pm mayor fran sainsbury will be attending at 3 pm everyone is encouraged to attend and provide a record number of dona tions to celebrate 30 years of saving lives 30th anniversary red cross blood donor clinic
