the bill alto gether local officials heard last week but taxpayers will have to pick up the tab if council forgives the 1992 rental fee for use of the towns facilities warned finance director ed blackburn blackburn said department heads have worked their budgets out to the penny and the 2000 will represent a revenue loss if officials excuse the soccer clubs 1992 tab if you waive this fee you are writing off a loss for the town for this year blackburn said but the town asked for 1992 fees too late to collect last year and the club cant go back and ask parents to pay for a retroactive fee said whitchurchstouffville soccer club president sal lombardo lombardo told officials the soccer club executive has no problem working the 2000 field time tab into this years registration fees but said its impossible to request 1992s participants to pay this year lombardo said the club received a letter after its season began last year but that no figure was discussed blackburn however said the club was notified more than once before the may 24th season began warning the fees would be col lected from the 1992 season lombardo said if the club is forced to charge the 2000 for 1992 the funds will be collected from the youth to pay adult user fees from last year council will make a decision on the matter at its next meeting after discussions with staff police york officials may centralize phones less than half the residents living in york know the police departments phone number and it should be simplified regional officials heard last week regional councillor carole bell told officials a 1991 survey undertaken by yorks police department shows 45 per cent of respondents knew how to quickly contact police this should be of some con cern to us the number now is difficult to remember and in a crisis its hard to remember even the simplest number bell said the councillor was referring to a public needs survey by the york region police to help the force enhance its service to the public the department mailed 1105 questionnaires in dec 1991 randomly selected from each of the nine area municipalities based on its population of the 1105 mailed 505 were returned representing a 45 per cent return rate officials said in a list of about 20 major findings in the 60page report one of the most prominent dis coveries pointed out that less than onehalf of the 505 respon dents knew their local york regional police telephone num ber bell said the local numbers are not simplified and are just too awkward to remember during a crisis she asked for support to have police chief bryan cousineau change the number even though the emergency 911 sys tem will be online next jan uary councillor gord landon a member of the 911 committee agreed it would be an oppor tune time to change the police phone numbers to one common nonemergency number set up for the entire region he said he would bring the issue up at the next 911 meet ing here are some of the other major towns air handler system about 40 people were asked to leave council chambers at about 7 pm lasttuesday after smelling a bad odor deputy fire chief murray emmerson said repair crews were called in to repair an electrical problem in the air system emmerson said the terrible odor and dimming lights were the result of a blown curcuit fuse which shut down part of the three- phase system the repairs
