the g and r flooring jets in the championship match last week at the rec centre stars shine brightly at brampton tournament the markhamstouffville credit union stouffville stars came out over the weekend at the brampton girls hockey tournament the stars who had been winless since moving up from the novice b to the novice a level in january finally put it all together as they skated to victory at the brampton competition the stars opened up the tournament with a 44 stalemate with the heavily favored mississauga chiefs before holding london to a 22 stand off the stouffville squad then edged scarborough 2- 1 to advance to the championship contest where they doubled up mississauga 42 the stars built up an early 30 lead in the title match then hung on for the victory jennifer clayson had seven goals and three assists and lindsay mccafferty scored five times and picked up four assists to lead the stouffville attack throughout the tournament other point getters were christina davis karlee dudley carla millius emily patriarche lisa jacque and jacqui vankoughnet jessica bain andrew meyer and sydney kay also made strong contributions for stouffville with julia summerhill impressing in goal in all four stars games the stars now set their sights on the provincial championships in mississauga the weekend of april 23 cycling to help others around the world sport notes br u c e sta p one hundred weary cyclists are scheduled to bed down in musselmans lakes cedar beach park for the night of aug 14 before retiring to their tents for a much needed sleep the group will take part in a grand celebration in anticipation of the conclusion the next day of their 900kilometre adventure which will have begun in toronto seven days earlier thisgaggle of cyclists of all ages will be participating in the third annual cycle for kids a christian childrens fund of canada ccfc fundraiser which hopes to see 250000 raised for needy children families and communities in developing countries around the world as well as being infinitely imaginative the ccfc is no slouch when it comes to raising money since i960 the organization has beenproviding longterm assistance to people of all faiths in developing countries to enable to help them become more self sufficient in 1992 alone ccfc raised over 27 million in money and life saving supplies supporting countries such as somalia romania bangladesh and some 35 other countries world wide now that the legitimacy of the cause has been established all that remains is for the ccfc to line up its 100 willing cyclists those who took part in the two previous years say the long distance expedition is indeed an ordeal but one which left them with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment the first cycle for kids in 1991 was a halifax to toronto affair the distance was shortened last year going from quebec city to toronto this year officials decided on the tour of southwestern ontario the trip begins aug 7 when the 100 bikers will wave goodbye to well wishers in toronto ccfc officials are hopeful cycle for kids honorary chairs john olerud of the blue jays and his wife kelly will be on hand as the riders begin their adventure after their big send off its off to lake simcoes sibbald point via markham stouffville and uxbridge then its up with the sun on day two which will see the group pedal its way to wasaga beach owen sound is the stopping point on day three giving the cyclists the opportunity to ride along freshwater beaches at their own pace even stopping for a dip if they feel so inclined crossing the base of the bruce peninsula the group goes through the summer resort town of sauble beach on the shores of lake huron then its on to historic goderich and bayfield known for their marvelous sunsets cruising through farmland to stratford they will stop for the night and take in a theatre production before arising and heading off for the charming village of st jacobs theyll cruise along the magnificent elora gorge to fergus where the highland gaines will open having been revived by the sound of the bag pipes and the taste of haggis the cyclists will strike out towards musselmans lake the final days journey takes them into toronto and home to a heros welcome at ontario place riders are accommodated in tents provided by organizers and are given a big breakfast and supper daily there are support vans a truck for toting riders gear from one sleepover point to the next midday refreshment points and people to help fix your bike if you get into trouble cyclists are free to tour at their own pace with 100 kilometers the standard ride each day hor showers are available at each camp and theres even an entertainment program at night the only catch is that each rider must submit a pledge sheet with a minimum of 2500 in sponsored funds this hasnt been an unsurmountable task the past two years however as the event has raised over 300000 it sounds like the ultimate summer adventure among the participants in past years have been a fatherdaughter team a grandfather of 14 a mother and son duo and a freelance copywriter from australia who said afterwards that the adventure had restored her
