but if the initiative of a pair of local hockey enthusiasts pays off the rec centre could be home to a tier 2 junior a squad next fall brad gordon onetime general manager of the wexford raiders junior a hockey club and bernie leighton who skated with the junior b dixie beehives in the early 1960s have made formal application to bring a metro junior a hockey league franchise to stouffville were waiting for the application to be reviewed and approved said gordon whose wexford outfit played out of stouffville during the 197374 season we wont know until april gordon who has 20 years of managerial and coaching experience at the junior a level said the team would have a direct affiliation with the whitchurchstouffville minor hockey association wsmha the ice time is in place for next season and a home night has been arranged said gordon gordon said he and leighton would wait until they have franchise approval before putting together the teams management and board of directors the duo said their sole aim in putting forth the proposal was to give stouffville area players a place to go after they finish their minor hockey careers im looking at this from the view of the little guys they wont have to wonder where they are going to play after bantam said leighton who has two children in the wsmha minor hockey in stouffville was losing too many players to outside interests added gordon we want to retain the boys so they are able to play in their own home town and go to school here gordon said the towns midget program would be strengthened immensely with the possibility of the better players who still have two years of midget eligibility playing one year of midget in stouffville then going up to junior wsmha president wally crowder in expressing his support for the idea said the team could be a shot in the arm for his organizations rep program if we can solidify a junior club here we could have an omha champion midget team said crowder it would give our players something to shoot for we could get some of our midgets back from aaa the central ontario wolves and maybe some of our junior a level players who are playing elsewhere might return crowder was hopeful a metro league exhibition game might be arranged for the rec centre before the end of the current season to give local fans a taste of junior a hockey leighton who would serve as the stouffville teams financial backer said the goal would be to strengthen the wsmha not to make money were not in it for the money were just looking to break even anything leftover would go back into the wsmha system we would be looking to get the town behind the team and vice versa clippers ice buffalo title the cable tech midget clippers may have fallen short in their recent omha playoffs but the team was unbeatable at the regal patriots day tournament in buffalo over the weekend the clippers won all four games to skate away with the championship outscoring their opponents 235 along the way the stouffville squad put the finishing touches on the march to the title with a 51 win over london in sundays final the clippers scored twice within a span of 20 seconds early in the game they added a underway to hold a benefit hockey game april 23 at the rec centre according to paul sinclair who is helping organize the event the contest will see a group of former ontario championship winning stouffville minor hockey players going up against a team of present and former uxbridge bruins the stouffville squad will consist of players who skated with the four whitchurchstouffville minor hockey association bantam and midget rep teams which won ontario minor hockey association titles during the 1980s these victorious outfits include the 1980- 81 midget clippers the 8182 bantam clippers the 8586 bantams and the 8687 midgets as the april 23 game is to be the genuine article complete with hitting and body checking sinclair advises that only the former champs who are still playing some form of competitive hockey will make up the host team most of the unit will be stouffville intermediate hockey league sihl skaters the bruins team will consist of many of the endless stream of stouffville players who have headed north on hwy 47 through the years to play their junior hockey in uxbridge due to the lack of a team in their home town sinclair a former bruin who is currently playing in the sihl will himself be suiting up for the stouffville champs he will be joined by the likes of the games coorganizer dan larmer sean mcquigge who will come in from chesley for the occasion and lee brown who plans to make the trip from his home in cobourg kent state university pucksters tim evans and todd williamson another pair of familiar names from the 1980s in these parts will play for the bruins the game will see all proceeds go to the childrens wish foundation in the memory of the late dan mcneil admission will be 4 for adults and 3 for students with kids under 10 admitted free children
