p12 tribune february 3 1993 st stouffville v zze 6 of controversy sporti notes e there is a big league misunderstanding currently taking place involving the adult division of the whitchurch- stouffville soccer association wssa and the town some might see it as a simple matter of semantics as to when a notification of intent to charge adults user fees for a town sports facility becomes an official invoice but call it what you may its become a sensitive issue one which if not handled properly could result in the loss of the stouffville town spurs and the shut down of the rec centre soccer field lights this summer the confusion began when council decided last april to start charging adult soccer players the same kind of user fee that adult ball players have been paying for years recreation supervisor cathy richardson said the wssa was notified that its three recreational teams along with the stouffville town spurs of the newmarket and district soccer league would be assessed 2000 however it would appear some among the wssa executive regarded the notice as a mere proposal with the actual amount to be decided upon at a later date at which time the wssa would be officially billed we were not given an official bill just a notice saying they were intending to charge us 2000 said new wssa president joe caldeira spurs coach alfons rubbens said he was all ready to hit up his players for some scratch to help cover the amount but he was told to wait because the wssa had written the town asking them to waive the fee the town refused and rubbens and caldeira pointed out the wssa wasgiven a notice early last month saying that not only was the 2000 for 1992 due in addition permits for 1993 wouldnt be issued unless another 2000 was paid up front which is standard procedure for adult ball players aswell rec supervisor richardson smelling a problem in the making is reluctant to stir the pot but she believes the town has been on side from the start it was my understanding they the wssa had been officially notified about the fees last april she said they were told that the fee wouldnt be waived unfortunately this has become a bit of an issue councillor cliff dunkeidwho has been on top of the stouffville sports scene since his arrival in town in 1970 said he is in full agreement with the decision to impose user fees on adult soccer players as for caldeiras suggestion the wssa should be given special consideration for having installed the lights dunkeld said it was important to remember the fees were for maintenance and hydro not for the facilities themselves theyre the wssa not paying the hydro bill he said and besides they should be paying the same as those using the ball diamonds lights or not caldeira said it now comes down to how to raise the money especially in light of suggestions the lights might be kept off altogether if the adult fees arent paid we fought hard to get those lights he said now we cant use them this could seriously disadvantage the kids playing in the wssa said caldeira while the lights are not normally used for their games they are sometimes needed towards the end of the season when the sun starts going down sooner caldeira said the wssa wouldnt consider taking the money from the club reserves that money belongs to the little kids in the club caldeira said the adults are wssa members in name only but dont contribute money to the club the seniors and the spurs joined up with the wssa to keep from becoming illegal teams teams without a club affiliation they buy their own shirts and pay their own league fees etc as for the possible loss of senior soccer in town caldeira feels it is essential to keep the seniors on board so as to have something for the younger players in town to shoot for otherwise our best young soccer talent will leave town to play elsewhere he warns it all boils down to a job for a career diplomat to sort out lets hope all parties can sit down and come to an agreement lying down on the job photolori emmerson peter pearce is in a rather helpless position as he eyes the ball he just missed catching during action in the winter 3pitch tournament in goodwood on saturday
