p6 tribune january 20 1993 st stouffville tounviuei oris hhh i everything seems quite gym dandy at stouffville district the writing may well be on the wall for the annual threeweek gymnastics unit at stouffville district secondary school the program first introduced a few decades back by the venerable jim rehill and has been taken over in recent years by boys phsical education head dave connell it seems many schools have abandoned the program altogether the result of fear of injury along with a lack of confidence on the part of gym instructors some schools have simply replaced gymnastics with programs considered to be of greater value to the students but connell feels there is a place for gymnastics at the school it challenges the students with regards to coordination connell told me recently he admitted however that he is faced with a selling job each year to keep the program going at the school connell concedes there is an element of danger attached to the program and that special care must be taken to stave off injuries but he insists there have been few mishaps resulting from gymnastics at sdss except for climbing the rope we keep them close to the floor said connell who underwent extensive gymnastics training while in university weve only had a few accidents sport notes connell said there are spotters including teachers and grade 12 students and that the kids are only encouraged to attain their own level of proficiency if they dont want to climb the rope thats fine no one has ever fallen from the rope connell said the marking method used for gymnastics reflects effort as much as ability with a full 50 per cent of the grade based on how hard the kids try while the sdss basketball program is not faced with the same danger of extinction as is gymnastics the senior boys spartans squad is once again paying the price for the schools volleyball expertise the spartans with many players fresh from yet another ofsaa volleyball season were forced to play five games in 1 1 days before christmas with no chance to really prepare for the season they are still winless going into the examination break although fletcher feels things are definitely improving were coming were being patient said fletcher last week fletcher ever the optimist is setting manageable goals for the team he will admit the spartans chances of qualifying for the york playoffs are slim but looks to play a spoiler role at the ontario district high school aa tournament march 3 at walkerton fletcher saw some hope in the spartans performance at a recent tourney at huron hts ss in newmarket the team lost to sacred heart chs by a 6858 count which was a vast improvement on the last meeting between the two teams at which time the spartans were downed by a 33point margin fletcher prefers to point to the highlights rather than to dwell on the endless losses kevin barbe showed me the first sky hook id seen since kareem abdul jabbar retired in a recent game and jamie forfar made an nba move against milliken mills the other day twotime sdss senior male athlete of the year don clearwater continues to star on the york yeomen varsity volleyball team leapin donnie as fletcher used to refer to him in his days of sdss photosjoerd witteveen adam crowder 14 left hangs upside down on the ropes as dave markle 14 climbs to the ceiling in a recent stouffville district secondary school gymnastics class volleyball glory helped the fifth- ranked yeomen to a secondplace showing at the prestigious mizuno classic two weekends back the event held each year at york attracts top teams from canada and the united states fletcher predicts that the pick of this years sdss volleyball crop tim lavell brian snooks and jason cowan could well follow in clearwaters
