p4 tribune janjuar13j993 stf stouffville another 7 to prop up ont hydro a nother seven per cent j have whitchurch-stouf- fville residents become so complacent about the inevitability of bill increases that this will pass unnoticed and unprotested ontario hydro has a great deal of questions to answer from the residents of this province and yes this town why continue with a megabillion dollar project stringing power lines from sudbury to toronto when the contract with manitoba for hydro power has been cancelled and what of the nuclear plants why are they not at full efficiency stouffville residents are asked every year to come up with more when in fact hydro is making business for itself and taking its monopoly directly to the local utility municipalities and homeowners it has to stop fog- shrouded slopes but i have final ly and gratefully acknowledged my athletic limitations and the old man wasnt in the mood to dislocate his shoulder again instead we were waiting to hear the latest miserable weather fore cast on the car radio first we had to endure the local news in which alleged police cor ruption was the story of the hour one officer involved was said the announcer a threeandahalf year veteran of the force veterans used to begin after about 20 years of service or so i thought now we have veteran ball players of 25 and veteran hockey players of 21 so on that basis im a veteran writer kates gorne q i i d or d a le unfortunately the fact that i have reached this exalted status doesnt necessarily guarantee empowerment this word is all over the place like a rash these days if youre not empowered in some way youre really five minutes ago empowered people have learned to say no without being gracious about it they are empowered to stamp out racism sexism smoking drinking and immoderate laughter caused by inappropriate jokes which shouldnt be funny but are workshops selfhelp books and reams of newspaper have lately been devoted to the subject of empowerment a state to which leaders of the womens movement are particularly prone perhaps thats why its taken over from dysfunctional as the most overused word of the 90s presumably youre no longer dys functional if empowerment allows you to behave in the manner approved by the selfappointed expertrof the month it certainly has helped me to say no to skiing although i love going to our friends chalet for a change of pace my preferred pace changes from not terribly fast to stationary skiing has no place on my agen da and id much rather look at blue mountain thancareen down it and even in todays parlance i guess one illfated attempt last year doesnt make me a veteran skier
