are short on restaurant experi ence but long on innovation and desire and youve got whitchurch- stoufivilles latest slap in the face in these dour economic times in which we live when beverley and gary lyons got the itch to open up a 1950s and 60s theme family restaurantbar in the abandoned restaurant across the street from their ballantrae home in early october their friends thought they were crazy but today after two months of slug ging and four weeks of serving up burgers roast beef karaoke and gold en oldies those same friends are now in agreement that the lyons have come up with a hit the place is called happy daze and the whole idea is to take people back to the idealized ver sion of the 50s and 60s as portrayed in the popular tv show of a few years back theyve brought in an authentic looking juke box which has been mod ified to play compact discs at three selections for a buck the popcorn machine is also there and the old 78s are up on the walls but the coup de grace is the genuine 1947 chrysler royal that sits just out side the door the same model that served as the family car of the cun ninghams in the happy days tv series the car was purchased to add atmosphere said gary but when someone tiled for an hour and a half to get a taxi on our opening night we decided to turn it into a courtesy car for people who choose not to drive home he added while beverley and gary admit its a long haul they are beginning to believe they have come up with a win- from where i live bruce stapley ner we did all the work ourselves gary said trying to describe the mess they were confronted with when they took the place over the pipes were frozen and they had split we built the bar the dance floor and the stage we opened the place up and added the wood work and we bought the tables and chairs at auctions and we refin- ished it ourselves gary and beverley admit theyve had their share of problems since opening the doors but theyve never looked back and they insist they are having as much fun as the crowds who are steadily discovering the spot neither of us had any restaurant experience but were learning fast said gary an antique and custom car dealer beverley once operated a sewing and house cleaning business the music is the key said gary adding that he and beverley have always loved music and dancing bev erley says her husband is forever try ing to get her up on the stage to sing she admits to a passion for music and singing but is a little shy when it comes to crooning in her own restau rant gary and beverley admit to being more than a little surprised at the support they have received so far especially in light of the tough eco nomic times but then i guess every bodys got to get out every now and then or else theyd go stir crazy bev erley said the
