lose seat by tracy kibble staff reporter police call for more help the police union has tossed a plea for more officers into the political arena the york regional police asso ciation is appealing to candi dates running for regional coun cil in the november municipal election to add public safety to election platforms i dont want one of my mem bers to get killed because of lack of backup said association president paul bailey he is call ing for 75 officers to be hired the force of 682 uniformed offi cers has not increased its strength since 1990 and bailey said just to keep up with the pop ulation growth in the region 75 more police should have been recruited by now he said if the population continues to soar an additional 25 cops will be needed by the end of 1995 because it takes a year to train a new recruit bailey wants the officers to be hired now regional councillors dont give a hoot about what he calls a shortage of police power were an overhead to regional govern ment bailey said appealing to the region and to the police ser vices board got the police union nowhere bailey said so hes turning to the electors to make public safety an issue for council lors running for reelection and residents vying for a council seat this is not a contractual thing this is not about money its a safety issue where is ward 5 councillor bob ancheril thats a question many of his constituents might be asking these days since the man they elected in 1991 seems to have dis appeared from the face of the whitchurchstoufrville political scene ancherips absence of late has left his constituents virtu ally without contact as he has left no phone number for the press or town staff town clerk michele skinner said ancheril has missed 1 12 months of consecutive meetings the halfway mark to having his seat declared permanently vacant skinner said under the municipal act councillors who miss three consecutive months of meetings regard less of how many regular meetings are held within the month will be asked to vacate their seat unless council passes a resolution waiving the right council usually only authorizes a waiver for missed meetings for sympathy rea sons such as a car accident family death and the like the end of his term is coming to a close and there will likely only be two more meetings i before the summer break the election follows i in november ancheril
