pieces are all in place for the second annual challenge cup hockey game in memory of dan mcneil the game which will be held april 23 pits a team of past and present uxbridge bruins against a squad of former ontario minor hockey association champion stouffville clippers that game is to be preceded by a match between a national hockey league old- timers crew and the betz pools clippers oldtimers the action begins at 6 pm organizers have confirmed that onetime toronto maple leaf greats frank mahovlich and carl brewer will suit up with the nhl outfit the nhl roster will also include stouffville residents and former leafs bill root and bill hassard brian conacher pete conacher howie menard and onetime pro bob mcneil dans father are also scheduled to play lineups for the clippersbruins game which gets under way at approximately 730 pm will be almost the same as last years initial challenge cup contest the clippers won that match on a late goal by tim mcneil dans brother scott evans the canada the ontario season opened up with the barclay mines motocross in the pickering area this past sunday with stouf fville rider and 1993 ontario motocross circuit 250 cc b class runnerup peter marcelli among the contestants marcelli has moved up to the a class for the 1994 season barrett said the icebreaking event which was sanctioned by the canadian motorcycle asso ciation is part of the fox dream on spring series its the one riders have been dream ing about all winter said bar rett barrett said he has been busy since last september looking for new tracks to use for motocross events he recently obtained final approval for the country market motocross which will be held may 28 behind the stouffville sales barn chariots motorsport tap and eatery is to help sponsor the event which is to be held on a short natural terrain track with stadium style obstacles there are to be 20 minute races for pro class riders and 10 minute heats for amateurs barrett said one of the high lights of for the pee wee rid ers than the pro riders at most events the second annual uxbridge outback scheduled for july 23 next to the park beside elgin pond has been extended to two days this year said barrett it will serve as the eastern cana dian amateur championships for pee wee class and lady rid ers and is expected to attract riders from across canada said barrett last years event attracted around 700 spectators and five hundred riders according to barrett cycle fair 94 is to take over the markham fairgrounds the weekend of may 1415 it is to feature the 5000 canadian national pro purse motocross competition also on the card will be a variety of attractions such as a ride for sight motor cycle charity showbike competi tion a horse power competition a stunt demonstration moun tain bike racing and the metropolitan toronto police winged wheels demonstration team barrett said the event has been transformed from simple motocross event last august to a giant motorcycle show com plete with indoor booths barrett said local interest which had been waning for sev eral years is starting to build again the sport is starting to grow again since events began coming to this area again recently theres a pee wee class explosion which bodes well for the future as the young riders get a little older barrett said there is also a resurgence of local riders with some like marcelli enjoying great success theres lots of local talent coming out uxbridge has joe pugh a 14yearold in the 80 cc b class and then theres sean martland in the interme diate class theyre both doing well pair shuttles to the top nicole bardell and melissa gilroy were as good as gold at the york region secondary schools athletic association junior girls badminton championships at unionville high school on tuesday the stouffville district secondary school pair won the gold medal in the junior girls doubles event at the regional final gilroy a grade 10 student and bardell a grade 11 student picked up
