5 ivi f 4f 4 j 4 p4 weekendekmarch12 1994 ms pressure bears down on corridors of power back in 1917 when the govern ment announced that income taxes would be a temporary measure few could have predict ed that temporary would still be happening but it seems governments at all levels are beginning to get the message that overtaxation has run its course canada is the most taxed of all the industrial ized nations with the exception of france we pay 40 per cent of our wages in all manner of taxes while the french are hit with 44 per cent are we mad as hell and are not going to take it anymore cana dians have been warning politi cians of a tax revolt for years finally it seems that the message is beginning to sink in as an example this week pre mier bob rae in a dimly camou- viewpoint flaged bid to bolster popularity is holding the line on taxes in the newest budget in april from a government that began its mandate with many unpopu lar fiscal moves the announce ment this week that no new taxes would be levied is quite astonish ing especially with the crisis on the debt front looming for ontario and all this despite the fact that transfer payments from the federal government continue to be slashed in another camp municipalities are again shooting for zero bud gets of course this will all be thrown out the window if property tax hikes become a necessity because the province dips into the well to cover short falls politicians at every level are increasingly aware that the mute and passive majority is beginning to grumble the likes of preston manning are feeding the growing consternation by telling taxpay ers to send a nasty note to paul martin finance minister with their tax returns this year at the same time politicians are keeping an eye on watchdog groups and taxpayer coalitions that according to recent surveys are growing by leaps and bounds with all the pressure bearing down on the corridors of power is petitioners still have no word on inquiry dear editor so the saga of mr jag bhaduria member of parlia ment for markham- wwtchurch- stouffville continues it is no longer front page news but the untenable situation in our riding remains even though he has lost credi bility mr bhaduria has made it clear that he will not voluntarily resign the more than 34000 constituents who have signed the petition requesting his resigna tion are waiting to hear whether their request for a parliamentary investigative inquiry will be granted in the meantime the political pundits and selfstyled clairvoy ants are having a field day dont they know smirked several members of the media that moral outrage is passe and defi nitely unfashionable in the 1990s allan fotheringham has sneered those eager purveyors of democracy would best go back to politics 101 and dalton camp another respected politi cal commentator has gone so far as to mock the will of the peo ple as being reflective of imma ture and impractical political judgment when referring to mr bhaduria his question is who cares the voters have been labelled everything from arrogant to naive to poor losers by selected members of the media and have been accused of hooliganism and moronic behaviour by the hon member himself the message appears to be that ordinary citizens have no right to feel betrayed and outraged by anything that an elected repre sentative does or has done in the past and the voters should cer tainly not voice this outrage by using the only democratic means available the petition however in spite of being mocked and insulted the people of markham- whitchurch-stouf- fville can take pride in knowing that we have brought the issue of credibility of political candidates from a local to a national level a new awareness has been achieved in which candidates and voters alike will take the issue of nomination and repre sentation more seriously the cynics may continue to smirk but we wont be fooled again kathleen freeman coalition for fair represen tation in parliament thornhill adam by brian basset pattrwonthe coicnefinwerm ato fail toa the and oyer weswt ihmkawrrnhei wwentmtoeanew ah0mservih1 ssri it any wonder governments are finally getting the message that we cant and wont pay anymore pundits are beginning to see a light at the end of the bureau cratic tunnel seeing an age when government waste and excess overspending and over- staffing are a thing of the past cuts in spending are a daily occurrence now and with them a slow adjustment for the popula tion to a new way of life the talk of a tax revolt is moot the canadian brand is already happening and weve hardly noticed markham economist and sun st0uffville tribune uxbridge tribune weekender edition a mrfxoland community newspaper patricia pappas publisher jo ann having taught young michael rubinoff i would have no hesi tation in receiving a report card from him he is a capable student very articulate and displays good common sense unfortunately i am not able to describe all of my students in the same manner michael describes students as experts those experts have had no formal evaluation train ing and often lack enough responsibilitymaturity to even complete their own homework im afraid that the evaluation undertaken by many of them would amount to no more than a popularity contest among teachers education is not ready for that perhaps as a start we could obtain some experience by eval uating how well mom and dad are doing as parents what do you think of that folks dg hamilton unionville probe may avoid injustice the first and only time i met jag bhaduria was a few months before his election to the parlia ment i found him brash aggressive and evasive not the kind of politician i would vote for anyway i was not in his riding in the last few months my judgement on him was vindicat ed i thought by the revelations of his letters his misrepresen tation of his qualifications etc ive had second thoughts though lets face it jag bhaduria is the product of the environment we have created for ourselves in this competi tive environment every one is trying to edge out the other guy it is the competitive spirit working in us not in the olympic spirit though howev er there are exceptions to every rule to the good exceptions i bow in deep humility let him cast the first stone who has never sinned said christ let us search our souls and find out who amongst us has never been angry never exaggerated is it you i our priests or politicians no one is perfect no one is infallible we are blowing things out of proportions what is bhaduria guilty of he wrote a nasty let ter perhaps under the pressure of the moment and he has apol ogized to the board of educa tion in writing much before his election time he has also apolo gized in the house of commons bhaduria has been repeatedly asked to resign his seat since he is no longer in the liberal cau cus a wrong choice you hadvour n i oh you made a via thats too bad- a a a a 1taa a fair chance now your elected member of parliament must be given herhis fair chance to per form you must wait for four years to choose again this is democracy at work jean chretiens handling of the jag bhaduria case while his government was still in its infancy will haunt him for making a hasty judgement per haps he could not take the heat in the meantime jag bhaduria has shown political maturity by refusing to believe that all attacks and agitations against him were racist besides exhibiting nerves of steel in fac ing the recent onslaught against him he says he has been sent to the parliament by people of all ethnic backgrounds and he intends to stay there to serve them if liberal mp john nunziatas suggestion that the bhaduria controversy be probed by a par liamentary committee gets some support a great injustice may be avoided nunziata says he will support bhaduria to return to the liberal caucus if he is cleared by this committee jag bhaduria has the mak ings of an astute politician he is educated to say the least he is intelligent he is cool given the time he may sur prise those who are seeking his ouster david smith the board of trade and markham council and perhaps the prime minis ter v bush chopra retired conference speaker and management advisor etobicoke 7- v
