p4 weekender february 12 1994 st legislate fewer places to light up cigarettes prime minister jean chre tien could use some new advi sors not only has he affronted residents of markham whitchurchstoufrville riding by washing his hands of the jag bhaduria affair but his tax reduction on cigarettes will have farreaching repercus sions from the monetary point of view policing of borders to reduce smuggling will cost 150 million the tax reduction will cost 300 million the tax reduction is causing a mass exodus of cigarette buy ers to quebec where a carton can be bought for a little over half the price in ontario to give the liberals credit they had the right idea its just viewpoint paula crowell somewhat askew they realize the only way to change peoples habits is through their pocket- books but the liberals could have used the 450 million theyll lose by their decision to create positive prevention for the 32 per cent of canadians who are smokers three years ago crossborder shopping was the hot issue everyone was doing it stores in american border cities were reporting plentiful sales from canadian customers canadi an border cities feared theyd be turned into ghost towns by shoppers who abandoned them for cheaper goods in the south it hasnt happened the canadian dollar dropped mak ing it less economical to shop in the us and canadian stores beefed up their service since then crossborder shop ping although it still takes place has become a nonissue there isnt enough going on to warrant concern the same result could have been achieved in the contra band cigarettes situation implementing the export tax and maintaining policing at the borders would help but the federal government could also offer incentives to municipal governments who enact and enforce nosmoking bylaws if there are fewer places to light up smokers will have less time to smoke rural areas need special attention the federal government has taken the simple route and will find its plan meets with little success taking away the want is the longterm solution to the cigarette smuggling problem markham economist and sun stouffville tribune uxbridge tribune weekender edition a find three new fire vehi cles in one year unacceptable regardless of how antique the present equipment may be 1 the new aerial truck which was delivered jan94 with a price tag of 513000 sos will not accept any responsibili ty of an additional 51000 because of delays we lobbied hard against this particular model at any price but it is here we now must find the funds to pay for it 2 a new pumper truck to be delivered in june94 with a price tag of 115000 3 a new suburban to be ordered with a price tag of 23000 plus trade during cap ital budget deliberations the fire department budgeted an additional 125000 for new and replacement equipment the fire department operation budget was in excess of half a million dollars all of these expenses incurred on behalf of our department must be at the expense of every other department we find this inconsiderate selfish and self- serving even when we have state of the art equipment there is no guarantee that some external force will not render the equip ment less than efficient eg severe weather narrow drive- editors mail w8 ways spring thaw make no mistake we have the best paid volunteer firemen we are gratified for their dedica tion to protect us all but what we must all understand is what we want to provide and what we can afford to provide are light years apart sos committee executive liberal executive wants local and national change dear editor we hold the principles of honesty and integrity to be fundamental to our canadian political process we support the prime minister in his decision to accept the resignation of the sitting member it is important that our riding have liberal representation in the government of canada in view of the events of the past week we believe it is time to take remedial action this action should take place at both the local and national levels as the liberal executive we will press for the necessary changes and we look to the constituents of our riding to support these efforts for change frank hogan president marldiamwbitchiirchstouffville federal liberal riding association school board fired bhaduria and we should fire him too dear editor in response to the letter pub lished in the weekender by ndp candidate jack grant i was very disillusioned that he felt that we the constituents should allow jag bhaduria to get on with his job what really upsets me more was the fact that this comment came from a political candidate jack were you not taught in school that when voting for a political candidate to hold officeseat in government that you are to vote for the person who will represent your voice your ideals and your beliefs childish letters show mp unfit as politian dear editor i think that mr bhaduria should resign because obviously the only release that he has for his anger is to send rude letters obvi ously violence on tv has had a greater impact on adults than children that sounds like such a childish way to vent his frustrations and thats coming from a 14yearold as far as im concerned this proves that mr bhaduria couldnt handle political issues in a professional manner jeff patterson stouffville that when you vote you are voting not only for the person but first and foremost for the party he is representing the people in the riding of markham-whitchurch-stouf- fville voted for a liberal repre sentative for the liberal ide ologies and philosophies that will guide a liberal party in its decision making i believe that jag bhaduria was voted by the people of this riding to be a liberal represen tative not an independent and since he cannot represent us as he was voted to then he should resign before he brings more embarrassment to this riding are you saying that it is ok to write threatening letters and still hold a seat in parliament think about it jack an mps job is to represent the people who voted for him to believe and practice the political ideolo gies of the party he represents and to be honest in all that he does jag bhaduria has none of these qualities as jag bhaduria was fired from the toronto school board so should he be fired by the constituents that voted for him we want honest politics and liberal rep resentation in our federal gov ernment we do not want jag bhaduria marcia guthenberg lit tills iii silllfl adam homes swww by brian basset crwmmmtit wwewwwedto wmmwffi desiheath benefits tasps more
