r rzu st letters weekendernovember 27 1993 p5 former owner of local batching plant responds dear editor until last year i was one of the owners of the nowfamous concrete batching plant on bloomington road operated by st marys cement corporation as well until quite recently i was also a resident ofthetownofstouflville although 1 no longer have any financial interest in the property or in the eventual outcome of the legal battle going on between the town and st marys i have been follow ing the news concerning this issue with keen interest having read the recent statements made to the press by the mayor and new town cao and considering the towns decision to appeal their recent loss to st marys at the ontario court of justice i feel i must write to correct the propagan da and misinformation being fed to the residents by town officials the town claims they are justified in having spent almost half a million tax payers dollars to date fighting the aggregate industry because of their desire to protect town water supplies in general and the towns wells south of the st marys batching operation in particular however its about time that this claim be scrutinized and the facts made clear prior to becoming involved in the bloomington road property st marys cement corporation sought out the most qualified engineering firm available to assess the water supplies available at the site and to conduct an indepth study of any possible impact on the towns wells the firm ultimately chosen with good reason was morrison beatty consulting engineers and hydrogeologists william morrison one of the most knowledgeable and well respected hydrogeologists in ontario personally handled these studies lawyer peterjlewarne matrimonial personal injury legal aid accepted small business law bankruptcy real estate wills oyer 20 years experience low rates quality service 4701 highway no 7 at kennedy rd j unlonvllle ontario l3r 1m7 tel 4774381 fax4777668 24 hour availability because of his extensive experience in the area not only was he directly involved in the decommissioning and monitoring of the land fill site to the north he has been involved in numerous hydrogeologi cal investigations for other operations in the immediate area including having been retained by the province of ontario to develop the water supplies for the fish culture station on highway 48 this water supply is incidentally equal in capacity to the towns wells to the north and has not created any problems the results of the studies on the st marys site which included direct moni toring of the towns wells prove quite conclusively that the st marys batching operation will have no negative impact on the towns wells or water supplies although these studies were offered to the town when st marys first became involved in the property they expressed no desire to see them- i cant help but wonder at this point in time and hundreds of thousands of dollars later how many council members even bothered to read them before voting on a course of action which may cost the town millions part of the evidence filed with the judge in the latest court case which the town lost were the list of concerns is quite the hydrogeological studies commis sioned by st marys the towns response to this evidence was to hire a local hydrogeologist to try and discredit the results of the morrison beatty reports this attempt was obviously unsuccessful as a matter of interest the towns hydro- geologist was the same individual who designed the original septic systems in westfield estates to the best of my knowledge this is the only examination of the water issue undertaken by the town and i personally challenge them to pro duce the test results and studies which they have relied upon to continually make the claims that they have about the haz ards of batching plants and st marys operation in particular according to merlin dewing in his recent letter to the press the town has spent about 400000 because the town is extremely concerned that the potential exists for the degradation of the aquifers serving area wells isnt it odd that the cost of engineering to prove or disprove this potential threat would have been only about 150000 and would have been paid by the property owner thats 250000 less than the town has spent to date as far as im concerned based on the evidence the statements
