ondary school sdss spartans junior girls basketball team went all the way to the finals at the annual junior girls basket ball crusader classic tourna ment at sacred heart chs recently the spartans who took both games played friday to advance to the championship round were defeated 4823 by the aurora ss eagles in sat urdays title match the sdss squad downed the host team 3718 in front of a large audience in fridays open er the spartans followed up with a 2822 win over st roberts chs michelle gilroy anne fergu son and melissa gilroy were named sdss mvps for the three games michelle gilroy led sdss scorers for the tournament with 21 points melissa gilroy went to the hoop for 14 points lori giancoulos added 13 points stephenie summerhill and amy sled had 12 each andrea wilson 11 and nicole defeat woodbridge hs 3824 three days later meanwhile the junior spar tans crushed their woodbridge opponents 4510 the same day erin blenkhorn scored 11 points in the seniors narrow loss to donevan wendy bur rows melissa austin tanya couperthwaite and leona milos also picked up points for sdss danielle timms scored 11 points for the midgets in the first half against vaughan but was sidelined with an injury for the games second half jen reesor alison crowder shan non timms stephanie hobbs lillian boyd and jen easter all played well for the spartans against woodbridge the midget spartans while the schools midget boys team was out standing as well at the ontario federa tion of schools athletic asso ciation cross country cham pionships held saturday at the boyd conservation area in woodbridge lougheed placed 28th over all out of 211 runners in the midget girls race while cliff was 30th in a field of 212 in the junior girls event neighboring markham dis trict high school took the gold in the junior girls event the sdss midget boys squad finished eighth out of 33 teams the team includes blair richards chris weatherill dave robinson joe cherkas and ian hazelwood the midgets squads suc cess allowed them to reach objectives set at the start of the season said stouffville head coach dave connell we had three goals as a team he revealed first to beat aurora sec ond to beat our last years sdss team result and third to finish in the top 10 we did all three in excellent style connell had praise for lougheed and cliff maran is primarily a swimmer but she has shown a great deal of determination and energy to achieve such great results sarah put the capper on a simply excellent season with her finish in this race she jias shown she can compete with the best in the province connell said the strong showing was a tribute to the entire stouffville cross coun try team as coaches we are very proud of the eight runners who competed at the ofsaa championships but we are equally proud of all the run ners at our school who trained hard and ran in all the races except this final one they are all winners just for putting forth the energies needed to compete connell
