p4 tribune december 30 1992 st stouffville most wont miss 1992s uncertainty tep aside 1992 and make way for a brand new year take your financial uncer tainty with you take your foodbanks your unemployment and your high interest rates with you take your neverending tax hikes and your govern ment wrangling with you too drop off instead some healthy job creation pro grams to get those people who lost their jobs back in the work force drop off some positive signs to ease the financial pain felt by so many during your long 12month stay and drop off a dose of opti mism for all canadians who deserve a break from your incessant setbacks good bye 1992 most are glad to see you go and welcome 1993 with hope for a healthy and pros perous new year no more tree wights and no more ho ho t he christmas tree lights have been shut off for anoth er year the ornaments packed neatly away in their boxes the stockings tucked away in the cupboard it seems kind of sad to have it all end especially since my tod dler cried as he witnessed grandpa chopping down the great tree he came to adore dur ing his first real christmas wights wights he would demand each morning pointing to the tree until mommy or daddy would go plug them in being oblivious to the spiralling costs of hydro and the need to conserve my son just couldnt begin his busy day without the tree lights on each time someone would come through the front door kody would point to his tree proudly showing off the colorful wights for our guests but monday it all came to an end grandpa hauled a big box into the livingroom and began sawing our tree down branch by branch he stuffed our once glittering christmas pine into the box tied it with twine and carried it off bye bye tee kody said and all was forgotten for another year no more ho hothats the man in the red suit and no more christmas tree balls to kibbles bits t r ac y k i bb bat around children have a way of making these moments especially sad and memorable for adults the postseason cleanup is a dreaded job taking down the decorations finding room for all the newfangled appliances sweaters and toys seem an endless chore not to mention that terrible thought of those january bills the ones you ignored last month to make christmas extraspecial for the family but for kids it can be quite a shock to see all the happy times pushed into a closet all in one afternoon children shouldnt have to think about the pres sures and stresses of everyday life thats what childhood is all about my son was one of the lucky ones showered with toys clothes books and trinkets he will no doubt spend hours each day discovering all of these won derful gifts he has no idea that some kids are less fortunate nor does he care innocence and ignorance are two of the plea sures of being a child i cant help feeling a little guilty though for the many chil dren out there who are a lot less fortunate with the recession looming over us like a dark cloud i have but one hope for 1993 i hope families across the coun try will find it easier in 1993 to make ends meet best wishes to all for a prosperous and happy new year stouffville tribune publisher patricia pappas general manager
