senior boys vol leyball team is off to the provincial finals after going through the motions of winning their sixth consecutive durhamyork dyssaa doublea championship tuesday at courtice ss in oshawa its off to the two day ofsaa showdown in alliston next weekend for the perennial biregional champs the sdss junior boys volleyball squad experienced similar success in the junior dyssaa showdown monday at port perry hs going undefeated in eight games to regain the durhamyork title the victory capped a year long climb for coach sandra applebys junior spar tans who started out the season long on talent but short on cohesion according to their coach they have excellent skills but they struggled with their cohesiveness at first said appleby but in the end they put it all togeth er actually they played better at the york finals last week in sutton than they did in port perry monday the first year coach credited setters jason whitelaw jason reesor and ryan jefferson along with team cap tains mike green and ryan burkholder with spearheading the spartans dyssawin the whole team played well said appleby the juniors went undefeated in the preliminary round then bounced msgr pereyma ss in the semifinals before besting port perry 157 151 in the championship set the seniors were equally formidable disposing of newmarket hs and msgr pereyma in straight games before oust ing courtice 153 159 in the semifinals the spartans finished off pereyma 15- 4 159 in the title round spartans coach jim fletcher said he gave everyone a chance to play in the tournament and that the team was playing at top form all day long when that machine gets in motion its dangerous he said of his spartans relentless attack fletcher was to have his team prepare for the highly competitive ofsaa event senior cage crews its the end of the line as the midgets were the only squad to prevail in a semifinal tripleheader played at sdss wednesday the midgets who placed first in the eastern division york standings in regular season play used a strong defensive effort to beat woodbridge high school 3724 nine players shared in the scoring for the spartans with stephanie summerhill nicole dardell and melissa gilroy heading up the offence bardell jen cowley and alexis miller stood out defensively for sdss the junior spartans who also finished first in their division were upset 3229 by a taller richmond hill secondary school team andrea crothers went to the hoop for 18 points to power the spartans offence but the shots werent falling for the sdss girls the shots rolled off the rim instead of into the rim said disappointed juniors coach sheila coleman who praised her teams determination and effort they were the best team ive seen as far as work ethic both in games and practices coleman said her girls werent allowed to use their game plan against richmond hill were a fast breaking team but they were bigger and slower they slowed the game right down michelle gilroy did a great job of
