region takes aim at official plan sal bommarito staff reporter completing the official plan and finding longterm solutions to the water and garbage problems top die list of issues facing york regions new council the issues were addressed at a fourhour orientation session for councillorselect at regional headquarters in newmarket on tuesday morning the session wasjalso attended by a number of regional staff members arid regional chairman eldred king the session began with a 10minute promotional video on york region and featured speakers from the regions five main depart ments as well asthree guest speakers council will be officially sworn in on december 12 during an overview of each department a number of other issues were also addressed including the renova tion of the regions seniors home changes to its child care and health care systems and the implementation of major road construction projects planning commissioner hershel weinberg told coun cillors the region has been working on its official plan since 1982 the process is a long and difficult one he said it took metro toronto between 2025 years to com- plete its official plan the rules have changed since then what metro did is now unacceptable said wein berg the preparation of a draft of the official plan for presentation to council will take place next year fol lowing a consultation process involving the region province and the public he said regional medical health officer helena jaczek said lobbying the provincial government for more funding and implementing new provincial programs and initia- tives top the health departments list as the province cuts back on funding to hospitals more pressure will be placed on regional programs she said were seeing sicker patients and our caseload in homecare is larger this will put the squeeze on our administrative costs said jaczek the berkeley report which recommends regional councils get involved in prioritizing public health pro grams is one example of new government programs tiie region must implement she said v we are excited about the berkley report you are the representatives of your community you know what i the community needs said jaczek community services commissioner peter crichton said new initiatives in child care recently announced by the ministry of community and social services will have a dramatic effect on suppliers the ndp government has clearly stated it supports nonprofit daycare facilities rather than commercial operations said crichton commercial centres we contract to will compete and try to sort it out he said the green paper new provincial childcare legis lation is expected next spring he said also high on the agenda is the consolidation of the regions two seniors home under one roofsaid crichton york manor will be closed and residents transferred to greenacres seniors home which will be renovated the new home will target the frail elderly and spe cialize in psychogeriatric and alzheimers patients said crichton ji we will have a firstclass facility at greenacres he said treasurer joe pennachetti said council will need to address the issue of increased levels of service dur ing the 1992 budget process in the longterm the region will have to face major infrastructure requirements costing 15billion over the next 10 to 20 years pennachetti told thecouncil- lorselect contractor investigates summitview site the contractor is unaware of how the cartridges ended up strewn across the construction site he said the site superintendent said a window and front door at the site had been broken into said gard ner no cartridges were found by gardner when he visited the site gardner plans to interview work ers about the incident from page 1 the contractor is prohibited from using the equipment
