clipper to find the range it would appear the concept of winter baseball or sno pitch as it has been dubbed is well on its way to becoming as established as its summer nearnamesake granted were still not at the pointwhere the town park dia monds are being booked for a half dozen or so major tournaments per season like the slo pitch boys are doing but the frigid version of the twifly pitch game has sure ly established a beach head here as well as the rest of the province while the legions bill kingsley has informed me his group will be icing its fourth sno pitch competi tion this february 7 to 8 there is now a second winter lob pitch event scheduled as well its to be the work of the spring lakes tigers mens slo pitch team which in its saner moments can be found on warm summer nights shagging flies and trying to touch green in the york durham mens slo pitch league ithe tigers are set to go the the stouffville pee wees won their contest with bradford above 42 and advanced to the finals of the legion hall like the legion the tigers ver sion is to be a mixed event with 16 teams fielding a lineup consist ing of five each of males an females at any given time there will be 500 in hot toddy money for the winners if indeed 16 teams do sigh up the second third and fourth place squads will pull in 300 200 and 100 respectively it will cost 200 to enter right now it looks like the ball players will have it all to them- t f v 1 t 9 r v t selves for both tourneys with no winter carnival sideshow because of our schizophrenic winter sea son with its roll of the dice approach to hot and cold weather the carnival concept seems to have gone the way of the two foot snowstorm for while sno pitch can be played on either snow grass or even mud ice sculpting contests and sleigh rides tend to lose a lit tle of their appeal when a chihook blows in leaving the park a drea- 1 ry shade of brown however kingsley says that if anyone is willing to play weather roulette and organize an activity for the weekend of the legion competition his outfit will be more than happy to accommodate them as for the tigers tourney spokesmen murray pattenden and al byers tell me they are feeling put the waters with the hope of making this a qualifier for you guessed it the all ontario sno pitch championships yes such is the growing popu larity of the winter version of the eyeryman spftball game that slo pitch ontario has put together a mixed sno pitch title event v in fact pattenden informed me that when his outfit approached molsons with the hope of getting some sponsorship they told him they were already overextended with sno pitch sponsorships for the coming winter season kingsley told me the legion considered going thequalifier route with its tournament this time around but decided it was too much of a hassle for now maybe in the future he added the legion will once again use their tourney as a fund raiser for easter seals and the childrens wish foundation kingsley said there would be a 185 entry fee but he wasnt sure what the prize money breakdown would be pattenden said he was glad the legion had decided to continue its tradition this winter saying it would give his team a chance to play in a tournament in town host teams are usually too busy taking care of the business of umpiring administering etc to even consider fielding a team one of the advantages to the winter concept as pointed put by pattenden is that the problem of drinking beer outside which has caused concerns at summer com- petitions is virtually nbn existent sipping back a cold glass of suds amid chilling winter winds would be a little like nursing a hot chocolate at a slo pitch tourney in mid july v so all you slo pitch aficionados mark those two dates on your cal- endar retrieve your dusty old ball glove and go sign up deadline for registering for the spring lakes tourney is jan 3 and you can call pattenden at 640- 2455 or byers at 6408693 for details brrrr m ch lb r ijst fat st- 1
