fastball team the merchants who emerged vic torious iii last years shootout would appear to have all the pieces in place to make it two provincial titles in a row as they head down to kemprville for the threeday touma- ment v my but coach howard burkholder while cautiously optimistic is aware that anything carl happen in a com- petition where two losses mean its time to go home he lists his teams odds of winning it all at around 25 percent there are 24 good teams there to win it all you must have your pitching going well plus you must have three or four guys hitting the ball if we have that then i think we have a better chance than anybody while his hitters have emerged of late the coach is mildly concerned about his pitching our bats are starting to come alive he told the tribune friday but glen cole and byron bara nieski are not pitching the way they can when it comes down to the crunch though i think theyll be there darren crawford is pitching jvery well however hes been a real surprise burkholder insists that baranieski who was the crucial factor in last years provincial championship holds the key if byrons throwing well i think well win it the merchants will start off with a game against merlyn friday at 6 pm then its on to a gruelling saturday schedule begin ning with a match with either shakespeare or the ontario rural softball association champs at 8 am provided they keep winning the merchants will then play at 12 4 and 8 pm if they emerge from that pressure cooker still intact its on to the final on sunday in league play last week the mer chants took advantage of a miscue to beat the visitors from brooklyn 109 at the town park trailing 98 going into the final inning the merchants put runners on second and third with none out baranieski singled driving in the tying run however the brooklyn catcher thinking it was the winning run walked off the field allowing steve whitson to scamper home with the winning tally as the throw from the left fielder sailed into the unguarded home plate area cole bashed a threerun homer for the merchants the stpuffville squad got a solid pitching effort from crawford and a tworun homer off the bat of rob parcells in a 61 win the notion that males and females are definitely not of the same physical make up is respond ing to the growing interest in fitness among senior women according to the centred co- owner freda schuemer one of 200 certified fitness instructors in ontario a good exercise program is vital if a woman wishes to maintain a reasonable standard of overall health and comfort in her senior years and it matters not if a person is handicapped or disabled freda insists her club is wheel chair accessible and there are programs available for people of all ages no matter what their physical limita tions with the womens health club now into its fourth month freda says the basics are in place she now intends to embark on the seniors fitness program she has had in mind right from the start fredas own past experience includes the running of fitness pro- sport notes siwffiisiims grams in seniors residences she has worked with people suffering from alzheimers disease and parkinsons disease and is con vinced that these people as well as seniors without specific disabilities notice a big difference when they- being a regular exercise program what she is proposing is a special program beginning this month that would see senior women come to the club tuesday and thursday mornings they would go through a half hour group workout with 15 min utes of individual instruction as well the aerobics segment of the pro gram is nonstrenuous the bulk of the exercises can be done from a seated position or with a chair nearby for support if needed there is a whirlpool which can be used both before and after the workout for the purpose of reliev- ing the discomfort of exercise for those suffering from arthritis whirlpools serve the purpose of keeping everything soft and warm after exercises so that soreness doesnt set in the seniors will use weight machines designed for promoting muscle endurance not muscle building these along with dyna- bands will provide the resistance training which freda claims is so essential for getting calcium into the bones essential in the preven tion of ostepporoses the resistance in the weight machines comes from hydraulic cylinders so there are no actual weights to lift and lower thus the movement is of a gentler nature than with most weight machines the dyriabands are broad elastic ribbons they offer consistent resis- v tance instead of the raising and lowering of weights normally asso ciated with standard weight machines freda adds that the sociability factor has also been built into the program there is a coffee bar fea turing fresh baked goods for when the workout is over the club also has an open air bal- cony in which to sit providing the sunlight which freda says is such an important factor in maintaining strong bones a massage therapist is available at the club on tuesdays the club will offer a reduce price for seniors enrolling in the specially designed program the standard 175 initiation has been waived for them and the 12- week seniors pro gram has been set atjs118 which is lower than the regular club price freda insists the program can benefit all seniors we are promoting a safe non competitive environment she adds this program is for seniors of all ages and sizes with or with out handicaps 2
