preferred said separate school trustees teachers requested a clarification of the york region roman catholic separate school boards policy on including the prevention of aids through the use of condoms and foam in the family life program trustees discussed a motion endorsing the promotion of condoms as a form of birth control and as protection against hiv infection although the motion stresses the boards preference for abstinence from intercourse until marriage at all times teachers will stress that abstinence is the only way of ensuring prevention of the hiv infection and affirm the wisdom of our tra dition that sexual intercourse take place only after marriage the motion reads trustees discussed the issue at a december education committee meeting and again at this months meeting after seeking input from parents an amendment including the endorsement of chastity until marriage was added at last weeks meeting i think wed be closing our eyes to whats happening in society today if students are not taught about the proper methods of infection prevention board chair joe virgilio saidmy concern is for those who reject the teachings of the church markham trustee terry ryan said after attending a brother andre par entteacher meeting he feels most parents are in favor of the condom seg ment of the course you dont endorse something by talking about it ryan said grade 7 students have been taught about condoms and foam for over a year in separate schools in york region however for many years the sub ject of birth control was not part of the catholic school systems
