p4 the tribune wednesday september 20 1989 alls well with town councillors whitchurchstouffville town council flexed its municipal mus cle last week in refusing to be swayed by pressure from a local developer to approve a housing bid the proposal to build 14 estate homes in northern whitchurch- stouffville is at a standstill council reserved judgment on the plan until the results of a test well on the property are submitted its a good example of councils willingness to- get tough with developers when it must despite facing pressure to ap- erove the bid which has been efore town officials for seven months council members are be ing cautious its exactly thisjyipe of ap proach that assures better development for townships like whitchurchstouffville considering past experiences with wells at various sites in the area councillors are showing foresight with this proposal they are demanding the best in order to minimize any potential problems it may cause shortterm headaches for those involved but the longterm benefits are ob vious especially to new stouff- ville citizens who will purchase the homes saturday traffic issue hits close to home a recent letter to the tribune on the sensitive subject of sales barn traffic struck close to the heart of this columnist who has the dubious fortune to live on main street i need hardly point out that when we purchased chateau gilderdale we were blissfully unaware that the entire pro vince would be driving past our driveway every saturday mor ning pausing only to block it as we tried to reverse out into the teeming mass of metal on the first weekend we mov ed up here we thought there must be some kind of festival kates corner kate gilderdale going on but as we stepped out to survey this phenomenon we were besieged by motorists asking the way to the flea market the sales barn or the farmers market we started by issuing long detailed instruc tions now its just follow the car in front stouf ffville uxbridge tribune publisher grumble too loudly because the sales barn has been here much longer than we have and in its own way has put stouffville on the map when the weathers good theres an almost carnivallike at mosphere on main street and its amazing how much junk you can offload onto a captive audience during the annual garage sale theres the excitement of try ing to deduce whether the inter mittent earshattering squeal of tires and smell of burning rub ber will culminate in a loud thud the result of momentary inattention on the part of a westbound driver heading for the ninth line lights its a bit like counting the seconds bet ween a flash of lightning and the inevitable thunderclap theres no doubt that the traf fic problem keeps this family away from local stores on saturdays if we want to shop we wait for a rare gap in the flow and reverse smartly out in to the eastbound traffic turn south at the first opportunity and take a gentle cruise down the ninth as the sound of blar ing horns and rude gestures fades away behind us some retailers say they benefit from the nose to tail traffic but with parking spots about as easy to find as harold ballard on a soviet welcoming committee its hard to believe the majority of visitors stop downtown still if enough of them do shop here it seems to me its worth the irritation to maintain a vibrant and healthy business community in the downtown core its not really fair to lay all the blame on the sales barn anyone who tries to cross main street between 330 and 530 on a weekday afternoon knows that local traffic alone is becoming a major headache in stouffville we also know there arent enough traffic signals and the ones that keep being promised show no signs of materializing will it take another tragedy to get those promised lights at stouffer and main and winona and main installed and what about the edward and main in tersection with high school students trying to get out onto main street and the younger kids from orchard park jaywalking to get home faster its just a matter of time before someone gets hurt in the meantime were saving to buy a sherman tank so if youre thinking of parking your limo across our driveway on a sunny saturday morning just check that your insurance is all paid up seniors appreciate outings dear editor this summer the seniors of stouffville were taken on a summer outing by re max real estate
