council votes to keep cnr rail lines open the tribune wednesday september 20 1989 p3 tracy kibble staff reporter the canadian national railway is proposing to aban don its operation of railway lines of the uxbridge subdivi sion between lindsay and stouffville due to a lack of funds but whitchurchstouffville mayor fran sainsbury wants a threeway support letter be sent to cnr to reverse the abandon ment proposal because she said 95 per cent of all consumer goods are shipped by rail we need these lines open i think we should inquire if lind say and uxbridge want to keep the lines open as well we should all send letters to the cnr about this the mayor said without the local lines goods will be ship ped by truck creating more devastation to roads and an in crease in taxes weil issue comes to head from page 1 mayor fran sainsbury agrees the communal water system is not a good idea for area of 1000 people or less a communal water system is a wrong system and if faulty who knows whats flowing into some poor souls tank i would like to be reassured that we have taken all possible steps to ensure all possible safety there is a way to pre vent hamlets ward 3 councillor nick tatone said the graves consul tant wants a warm fuzzy feel ing of town support and the main issue is whether the town wants the 14 houses located there or not council voted to refer the matter to the sept 18 meeting and to wait until the results of a well are in before approving j the vivian road estate residential proposal this statement was sup ported by a letter to the mayor from the rexdalebased on tario trucking association president raymond cope the railways solution to this problem of a lack of revenue is for government to free them from its public burdens such as maintaining uneconomic branch lines and to increase road and highway taxes sharply mr cope points out the cnrs request to raise highway taxes is mischievous and self- serving and would cause negative impact on canadian manufacturers shippers and consumers the cnr is largely blaming the trucking industry for its loss in revenues claiming the truckers do not pay their share of highway funding blanche wells but mr cope said raising truck taxes would not divert traffic back to the rails because 90 per cent of food and 85 per cent of consumer goods are already transported by truck and only a small portion of manufacturers have access to railroads anymore ward 5 councillor doug alles said council should support the communities who want the rails continued and he strong ly urged that lindsay be con tacted in this regard i find it difficult to accept that cnr is discontinuing because of unprofitable rail lines this will reduce services to the community i stongly op pose this councillor alles added
